Latest leaked images also give us a closer look at the changes up front

  • Leaked images reveal a wider front grille, larger headlamps and reworked bumpers.

  • Cabin updates to include a revised centre console, bigger touchscreen infotainment, and more connectivity.

  • Should retain its 83PS 1.2-litre K12B and 90PS 1.2-litre Dualjet (with mild-hybrid system) petrol engine options.

  • Will be one of eight launches Maruti Suzuki has planned for 2022.

Maruti Suzuki has been working on updating the Baleno hatchback for a while now, and it’s being spotted testing multiple times. Now, the updated hatch has been spotted without camouflage again, this time at a production plant with the first unit being rolled out. The latest images also give us a glimpse at what will change at the front. The updated Baleno is one of eight new launches planned by the carmaker for 2022.

While it's not a clear shot, we can tell the front grille is less V-shaped than before and has gotten wider. The headlamps are now larger and certainly make their presence felt at the front. The bumper too seems to have gotten a nip and tuck. Earlier, spy images had revealed split LED tail lamps with the current model’s dual-tone alloy wheels being retained.

Earlier shots of the cabin revealed a redesigned centre console as well as a bigger touchscreen infotainment system (likely 8-inches). Additional features could include connected car tech, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless phone charger. That said, bits such as climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and a multi-info display should be retained.

Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, as well as  rear parking sensors should be some of the safety kits on offer.

Under the hood, the facelifted Baleno will likely soldier on with its 83PS 1.2-litre K12B and 90PS 1.2-litre Dualjet (with mild-hybrid system) petrol engine options. A 5-speed manual gearbox should be standard with an optional CVT, which is limited to the 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine.

Considering the production is underway, expect the updated Maruti Suzuki Baleno to launch in India by February 2022 at a price premium over the current model that retails from Rs 6.14 lakh to Rs 9.66 lakh (ex-showroom, India). It will rekindle its rivalry with the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, Honda Jazz, and VW Polo
