The commuter motorcycle has been discontinued as it was not updated with ABS as per the new safety norms.

  • The first-generation model was launched back in 2010.
  • The SZ-RR sold around 2800 units in March but the sales dwindled drastically in the following months.
  • Yamaha had also recently discontinued the YZF-R15S and the Fazer 150.
  • After pulling the plug on the Yamaha YZF-R15S and the Fazer 150, the Japanese brand has discontinued the SZ-RR Version 2.0. The move comes in after Yamaha failed to provide the ABS update as per the new safety norms which require compulsory ABS for bikes displacing 125cc and above. The SZ-RR isn’t exactly known to be a popular motorcycle in its segment and it shows in the sales numbers too. In March 2019, the bike tallied 2872 units and in the following month, the sales dropped to just 280 units! In May 2019, Yamaha did not sell even a single unit of the SZ-RR.

To give you a perspective, the Honda CB Unicorn 150 - one of the most popular 150cc commuters in India - tallied 11,062 units, 25,553 units and 26,897 units in March, April and May 2019 respectively. A few months ago, it was reported that Yamaha would be concentrating more on the premium segment and was reportedly planning to move away from mass-market space. This also explains the SZ-RR Version 2.0’s disappearance from the Indian market.

The first-generation model, called the SZ-X was launched way back in 2010. Four years later, the Japanese bikemaker launched the SZ-RR at Rs 65,300 (ex-showroom Delhi). Yamaha has always been associated with exciting performance-packed products, so the sober-looking commuter motorcycle, the SZ-RR failed to capture the fancy of prospective customers.
