Volkswagen made its entry in the hotly-contested compact sedan segment with the Ameo petrol variant earlier this year. While the car is priced competitively, it also features some first-in-class features, such as cruise control and all-four one-pinch up/down power windows. Where it fails against its rivals is under the hood. The sub-par 1.2-litre petrol motor churning out 75PS of power and 110Nm of torque is the chink in its armour since it drags the car down in terms of both refinement and outright pull. Also, customers shopping for sub-4 metre sedans often prefer diesel powerplants, and that’s exactly what VW is about to offer in the Ameo.
A few weeks ago, we spotted the VW Ameo diesel being tested on Indian roads. Well, VW is now entertaining bookings for the diesel-powered Ameo with an amount of Rs 10,000 across all its dealerships in India. The diesel variant is expected to feature the same motor that does duty in the Polo hatchback. That means the Polo-based sedan will have a 1.2-litre three-pot motor, pumping out 90PS of power and 230Nm of torque. The said engine returns an average of 22kmpl (ARAI certified).
As is the case with every car that offers both diesel and petrol engine options, the diesel-powered Ameo will attract a higher premium on its list price. When launched, we expect the diesel Ameo to undercut the Polo diesel’s price list, just like the petrol Ameo did with the petrol-powered Polo, when the sedan was launched earlier this year.
