Toyota Industries Corporation, Japan has Global Diesel (GD) engine plants in Japan and Thailand. Now, the Japanese car manufacturer has opened its third GD engine plant in India in partnership with Kirloskar Systems Ltd. The Toyota Industries Engine India (TIEI) is the first GD engine manufacturing facility by Toyota in India. The joint partnership involves a total investment of Rs 1,100 crore for the GD engine facility.
The TIEI plant will carry out the manufacturing of the new high-performance 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre and 2GD-FTV – 2.4-litre engines. Both these engine are currently being used in the just-launched Innova Crysta. While the 2.4-litre engine comes coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 2.8-litre motor comes mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Toyota claims that the new 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV engine is more powerful by 47 per cent and more fuel efficient by 13 per cent. Similarly, as compared to the previously used 2KD motor, the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV engine is more powerful by 71 per cent with an increase in fuel efficiency by 7 per cent.

Commenting on the new facility, Vikram S Kirloskar, vice chairman, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Director, Toyota Industries Engine India, said: “Today is indeed a proud day for all of us at Toyota Industries Engine India, as we unveil our first ever diesel engine plant here in Bangalore. The introduction of the GD series engines not only equips superior technology but also meet the new fuel efficiency policies mandate in the country. We realise diesel engine technology will remain an integral part of every automaker with strict fuel efficiency norms being implemented in India, therefore this engine project will strengthen our diesel business in the country marking Toyota’s first diesel manufacturing plant in India.”
“We hope to grow together with the local community and ramp up the process of manufacturing cars in India with readily available diesel engines made from our new Bangalore plant,” he further added.
The new facility is capable of having an engine production capacity of 1,08,000 units yearly. The manufactured engines will be compliant with BS4 / Euro 4 emission standards. Toyota has also made provision for the engines to be upgraded to BS5 / Euro 5 and 6, which can be done with a minor investment.
