Big SUV vibes, compact SUV price tag; now that’s a combo!

3XO

The sub-compact SUV space has exploded over the last few years and is now the most popular SUV segment in India. The appeal of these vehicles is obvious, they offer the practicality and ease of use of a hatchback, but with added space, more features, better road presence and that all-important SUV appeal Indian buyers simply cannot get enough of.

Whether it’s a first-time car buyer stepping up from two wheels or someone looking to upgrade from a small hatchback into something more substantial, the sub-compact SUV has become the default choice. But as the segment has grown, something else has happened too: most cars in this space have started feeling increasingly similar. The truth is, very few genuinely feel like a proper SUV.

Enter the Mahindra XUV 3XO. Unlike many of its rivals that feel like pumped-up hatchbacks, the XUV 3XO feels like a ‘true SUV’, and that’s reflected in the way it looks, how it feels from behind the wheel and the way it tackles Indian roads.

SUV Appeal Meets Premium Comfort

The first thing that hits you about the Mahindra XUV 3XO is its sheer presence. In a sea of rounded-off, city-focused compact SUVs, this car stands out courtesy of its proportions. It’s the widest in its class and has the longest wheelbase too, which translates into more room on the inside than any of its rivals. There’s generous legroom at both the front and rear, and it can comfortably accommodate five adults. Plus, it has a 364-litre boot that can easily swallow three carry-on suitcases and still have room for more. The 3XO features a muscular upright bonnet, squared-off fenders, black body cladding and prominent design lines all over. The aggressive front-end gives it the kind of visual heft you’d usually associate with SUVs from a segment above. There’s a split grille, split LED headlights with C-shaped DRLs and a silver skid plate.

In profile, it rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and gets a floating C-pillar design that looks rather cool. Around the back, there’s an upright rear-end with a full-width LED light bar, matching C-shaped tail-lamps and a chunky rear bumper. Mahindra has clearly resisted the temptation to make the 3XO look soft or overly crossover-ish. Instead, it embraces its SUV identity wholeheartedly and, importantly, it doesn’t feel over-designed either. That same philosophy carries over into the cabin as well.

Step inside, and the first thing you notice is the upright dual-tone dashboard. The XUV 3XO is also loaded to the brim with modern tech and features, including a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a similarly sized configurable digital driver’s display, a panoramic sunroof, an auto-dimming IRVM, dual-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger and a seven-speaker Harman Kardon sound system — with Dolby atmos — that sounds ace.

The SUV gets a dual-tone interior theme with a blue-and-white dashboard finished in soft-touch materials, and the same colour scheme extends to the doors as well.

There are white leatherette seats and those combined with the massive panoramic sunroof make the cabin feel airier. But what really stands out is that despite all the tech and premium touches, it hasn’t lost that underlying SUV character.

It still feels solid, substantial and properly built, something Mahindra products have increasingly become known for. The long list of features gives it a strong value-for-money proposition, while the impressive build quality makes the XUV 3XO feel like a complete no-brainer.

Where SUV Toughness Meets Modern Safety Tech

Indian buyers today are more safety-conscious than ever before, and Mahindra has clearly recognised that. Instead of treating safety like an optional extra reserved for top-end variants, the XUV 3XO places it right at the heart of the experience.

It gets six airbags, electronic stability control and all-wheel disc brakes as standard. Plus, it’s the only car in its segment to boast Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). There’s automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, auto high-beam assist and traffic sign recognition.

3XO

These are features typically associated with much larger and more expensive SUVs, yet Mahindra has brought them into a compact package without making it feel gimmicky. And beyond the equipment list, there’s something equally important: the way the car actually feels on the road.  The XUV 3XO has that reassuringly solid, confidence-inspiring nature that buyers associate with proper SUVs. It’s one of the best-riding SUVs in its class and irons out rough roads with excellent poise. It also has a dynamically sorted chassis that maintains composure at high speeds and feels planted around corners. There’s a maturity to the way this car drives, and that’s rare in this class.

3XO

While you get all the tech loaded for safety, the Mahindra XUV 3XO also aces with a 5-star safety assurance, in Bharat NCAP crash tests. So, it gives you, all-round safety!

One SUV, 12 Ways To Buy It

To satisfy almost every buyer’s budget, Mahindra has ensured there’s a version of the XUV 3XO for nearly every kind of buyer. With the addition of the new RevX variant, the 3XO is now available in 12 variants.

It can be had with either a 1.2-litre TCMPFi engine which makes 110bhp and 200Nm, or a more powerful 1.2-litre TGDi engine which boasts 129bhp and 230Nm — the most powerful turbo-petrol engine in its class. Plus, buyers can also opt for a 1.5-litre 115bhp turbo-diesel mill that churns out 300Nm, and all these engines can be had with either a manual or an automatic transmission. So there’s a little something for everyone, want a sensible and practical family SUV? There’s a variant for that. Want something loaded with tech and premium features? Covered. Want a punchy turbo-petrol with an engaging driving experience? That’s here too.

3XO

The variety of engine and gearbox options means buyers aren’t boxed into one-size-fits-all choices, and that flexibility is a huge advantage in a market as diverse as India’s. More importantly, Mahindra hasn’t kept all the good stuff exclusive to the most expensive variants either. Even the lower and mid-spec trims feel well-equipped, which makes the XUV 3XO’s value proposition incredibly strong.

And that’s ultimately what makes it such a compelling package. It combines premium features, proper SUV character, strong safety credentials and broad appeal into one cohesive product, without losing sight of what buyers in this segment actually want.

All In All More Than Just Another Feature-Loaded SUV

The Mahindra XUV 3XO doesn’t just compete in the sub-compact SUV segment, it challenges the segment altogether. In a category where many rivals feel like hatchbacks trying hard to be SUVs, the XUV 3XO stands apart because it feels like a genuine SUV that just happens to be compact.

3XO

Mahindra has successfully injected proper SUV DNA into it, giving buyers something that looks tougher, feels more substantial and drives with far greater confidence than most cars in its class. Add to that a premium cabin, segment-leading features, impressive safety tech and a wide range of variants, and the XUV 3XO ends up feeling like far more than just another compact SUV. It truly feels like a segment disruptor.
