The Mahindra XUV 7XO made its debut earlier this year as the updated version of the XUV700, bringing with it a sharper design, a more upmarket cabin, enhanced comfort and convenience features, and strong petrol and diesel powertrain options. Building on the success of its predecessor, the XUV 7XO continues to position itself as one of the most feature-rich and capable SUVs in its segment.

The XUV 7XO is available in 6 variants: AX, AX3, AX5, AX7, AX7T, and AX7 L, which are further divided into two engine and transmission options. Out of all of these, the AX7 is the mid-variant and one of the most value-for-money versions in the XUV 7XO lineup. In this article, we have compared the AX7 variant with the one-below-top AX7T trim to see what value additions you get if you decide to pay extra for the ‘Tech’ package.

As seen from the table, buyers have a diverse range of engine and transmission options to choose from. Both the diesel and petrol engines are available in both AX7 and AX7T variants. Unfortunately, the petrol manual powertrain is not offered on the AX7T trim, but the diesel automatic gets an AWD drivetrain option.

The price difference between all variants remains constant at nearly Rs 2 lakh (ex-showroom). The AX7T trim further gets an optional 6-seater configuration. The price gap is huge, and one must surely wonder whether it is worth it to upgrade to the upper variant when the mid-model already has most essential bits covered. Starting with the exterior design, both variants of the XUV 7XO in comparison here look identical, with most of their design elements. There are just some minor upgrades that the AX7T variant offers in comparison to the mid-spec AX7. 

Up front, both variants get a big black grille with chrome vertical slats, which are completed by C-shaped DRLs and bi-LED headlights. The lower end of the bumper comes finished in black, while a silver skid plate is also integrated onto the chunky bumper.

Keen observers will instantly notice the foglights and cornering lights missing in the AX7 variant, as they are offered from the AX7T variant onwards. 

From the side, the XUV 7XO is known for its muscular profile with a boxy yet sporty silhouette.

18-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, body claddings, flush door handles, and black ORVMs are common in both variants here. 

Moving to the rear as well, everything remains identical in both variants except for the AX7 and AX7T badging on the tailgate.

Both variants sport LED taillights with honeycomb detailing and a black casing, an integrated rear spoiler, a shark fin antenna, glossy black inserts on the rear bumper, and a slim silver skid plate integrated into the lower bumper.

Overall, both the AX7 and AX7T variants look very similar to each other. Mahidra has done a brilliant job in loading the mid-spec AX7 variant of the XUV 7XO with many premium design cues, which makes it hard to believe that it is actually the mid variant.

On the inside, the cabins of both trims share the same layout. However, the AX7T does offer some small premium and aesthetic updates inside the cabin to differentiate itself. Taking the centre stage in both variants is a three-screen setup.

The AX7 features a black, copper, and white dashboard layout, while the seats come finished in a dual-tone black and brown upholstery that should be relatively easier to maintain. In comparison, the AX7T gets a more premium-looking black, tan, and white dashboard theme, paired with white and brown seat upholstery, although it may require more effort to keep clean. Keen-eyed buyers will also notice that the AX7T comes with a dual-tone steering wheel finish, whereas the AX7 gets an all-black unit.

In terms of materials and features, the AX7 offers leatherette padding on the steering wheel, door pads, and gear lever. The AX7T further enhances the cabin experience with leatherette padding on the dashboard. It also gets a frameless auto-dimming IRVM and offers the option of a 6-seater layout with captain seats for added comfort.

The mid-spec AX7 variant of the Mahindra XUV 7XO is already very well-equipped with necessary and modern features, checking all the necessary boxes. But the AX7T variant does add a few more features to the list that tech-geeks might not want to miss. 

The AX7 variant comes equipped with three 12.3-inch display screens for the digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system, and the passenger entertainment display, built-in Alexa with ChatGPT, a BYOD Entertainment Screen Slot, a 6-speaker audio system, a panoramic sunroof, a 6-way electrically adjustable driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic headlights, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rain-sensing wipers, and paddle shifters (AT only)

The AX7T variant builds on this list by further offering a 16-speaker Harmon Kardon Sound System with Dolby Atmos, ventilated front seats and a front wireless charger with active cooling.

Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 Vs AX7T: Safety 

Mahindra has ensured a strong baseline of safety equipment for the XUV 7XO with many standard safety features. In comparison between the two variants here, the major differences lie in the additional tech-based safety features. 

The AX7 variant offers 6 airbags, and both the AX7 and AX7T variants come equipped with a 540-degree surround view, blind-spot detection, digital video recording, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, traction control, hill hold assist, cruise control, drive modes, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, ORVM auto-tilt on reverse, tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a rear defogger.

What the AX7T variant brings extra to the table are features like a Level-2 ADAS suite, adaptive cruise driver drowsiness detection, headlamp booster, electronic parking brake and LED fog lamps. Unlike the AX7 variant that comes with 6 airbags, the AX7T variant offers an additional knee airbag, taking the total count to 7.

Both the AX7 and AX7T variants of the XUV 7XO are available with turbo-petrol and diesel engine options. However, in the AX7T variant, the petrol engine is limited to automatic transmission. The diesel engine on the AX7T automatic variant, on the other hand, is also offered with a manual gearbox and an optional all-wheel-drive drivetrain.

For the additional Rs 2.04 lakh, the AX7T does not change much on the outside, but it significantly elevates the overall experience with a more premium cabin, added feel-good features, and a more comprehensive safety package, making the price premium feel justified. Stretch your budget a little further, and you can even opt for the AWD setup, which adds an adventurous edge to the XUV 7XO experience.

That said, the AX7 variant itself remains a well-equipped and sensible choice for most buyers. It packs in all the essential features you would need for daily use while helping you save a considerable amount of money if you are willing to skip the extra premium and flashy additions offered with the AX7T.
