Tata Motors launched its 1-tonne pickup truck, the Xenon, at the annual Bangkok International Motor Show today. The truck will be sold through Tata's own 20 dealer-strong network in Thailand, also currently under expansion.
Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors, explained his plans for the truck at the occasion. "We are hopeful that Thailand and the ASEAN region will become key markets for Tata Motors in the near future", he said. The truck has been designed and developed in Thailand, which is a major truck manufacturing base for the ASEAN region and a large truck market itself.
Powered by Tata's 2.2 litre DiCOR engine with a VTT turbo which is also seen on the Tata Safari and the newly launched Sumo Grande, the Xenon promises to deliver good power delivery along with lower fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
Tata will be banking on the experience of the Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant for assembling the Xenon in Thailand. The company is aiming at 50 percent localization for the Xenon in the country to ensure cheap availability of spares. The Xenon will be available in two variants - the X-tend Cab and the 4-door Double-Cab.
