Some major, and other slight improvements keep the Tiago relevant despite its age.

Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago has been the carmaker’s entry-level offering for quite some time now. Initially introduced almost a decade ago, the hatchback has gone through multiple changes over the time, and with a new generation still some time away, Tata has given it the most radical do-over till now. Now, we have gotten our hands on the new hatchback, and here are the top 5 things we love about it:

Still A Headturner

Design is something that has always defined the Tiago, and we are happy to report that the latest iteration has taken design very seriously. Despite being the second mid-life facelift, it brings in some key changes that go beyond what you would normally expect from just another ‘facelift’.

Amongst these, you can see that it has gotten sharper, edgier and mature compared to the more curvy and eager design language employed by the previous versions. This change has certainly induced a lot of freshness, while maintaining chic and stylish proportions. What can’t be ignored is the new colour palette which brings in some bright and quirky shades that immediately grab attention.

A Nice Place To Be In

Besides the major styling overhaul, the interior is all-new. You get to see a new sleek dashboard layout with free-standing screens, dollops of piano-black trim all over and new seats with integrated headrests. Tata’s designers have played around with interesting textures and materials here which make it feel premium inside.

The standout element inside this new cabin is the use of fabric padding on the dashboard and doors. Not only does it make the cabin look and feel more premium, it also significantly increases the richness of the cabin, which the buyers will definitely appreciate.

The rear seat, however, is not the roomiest out there, and inconsistencies with fit and finish is something that continues, but overall the Tiago feels more expensive inside than its price suggests and will be a good place to spend long hours in.

Improved Gadgetry

The older Tiago was a well-equipped car to begin with, and the new one has improved this aspect even further with additions such as a wireless phone charger, a semi digital driver’s display and a segment-first 360-degree camera which offers crisp and clean resolution.

Furthermore you also have the large 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 4-speaker audio system, new 65W USB Type-C charging ports and automatic climate control with new rear AC vents all of which are thoughtful additions and will pander to what most buyers would want.

Bad Roads? No Problem!

In true Tata Motors fashion, the Tiago has a robust feel and plush ride quality that helps you glide over pothole-ridden streets and undulations, while keeping things comfortable inside. On the other hand though, the hatchback remains settled and predictable on the highways as well. This is no corner carver and enthusiasts may wish it had a more precise steering, but most buyers won’t complain.

Powertrains For All

Mechanically, it remains the same as the older version, and that means it continues with the 1.2-litre NA petrol engine, with an optional factory-fit dual-cylinder CNG kit. What is notable here is that even with the CNG kit buyers can opt for the AMT transmission, which could be an appealing proposition for urban buyers with higher mileage.

While not benchmarks of the segments, both power plants offer a smooth and refined experience at city speeds. Out on the highway, the CNG can feel a bit sluggish when pushed, but drive in a relaxed manner and the Tiago performs well enough to not leave you wanting for more.

ZigSays…

In a segment largely dominated by another carmaker, it is appreciable that Tata is putting so much effort into keeping the Tiago fresh and relevant. Back when it was launched almost 10 years ago, it became one of the most competitive packages on offer, and we are glad to report that it continues to offer the same value-for-money today.

Tata Tiago

Some irritants still persist though; fit and finish, a sore point of Tata, still rears its head and there’s not much in it for the enthusiastic buyers, but otherwise it is quite an ideal small car runabout. This refresh should easily keep the hatchback relevant for a few more years till we see an all-new generation.
