Tata Motors has officially commenced bookings for its upcoming flagship SUV, the Safari. The manufacturer will reveal prices on February 22. It has also reached dealerships where one can take a closer look at it. Test drives for the Safari are also underway.

The Safari will be offered in six variants: XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ, and XZ+. The automatic gearbox will come in three variants -- XMA, XZA, and XZA+ -- taking the total count to nine. It will be offered in two seating layouts: a 6-seater with captain seats and a 7-seater with bench seating for the middle row occupants. The former is limited to the top-spec XZ+ and XZA+.

It can be had in three exterior shades: Royale Blue, Daytona Grey, and Orcus White.

While essentials such as an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with i-RA connected car tech, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and cruise control are present; the Safari misses out on niceties like a wireless phone charger and ventilated front seats. Safety is covered by six airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, an electronic parking brake with auto hold function, and electronic stability control.

Powering the Safari is a FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine that develops 170PS of power and 350Nm of torque. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The Safari can be had only with a front-wheel drivetrain. Tata, however, could introduce an all-wheel drive variant if demand persists.
