MG Motor India has showcased the Marvel X electric vehicle (EV) in India. A luxury crossover, it features advanced driver assistance and safety technologies. It is based on the China-spec Roewe Marvel X and comes with luxurious interiors and an NEDC-tested range of 403km. If launched in India, the Marvel X will occupy a niche position above the Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV.

On the outside, the Marvel X’s most striking feature is its paintwork. It’s called Klien Blue and Roewe claims it’s the ‘the world’s only pure blue.’ Flush door handles on the Marvel X recede into the bodywork to improve airflow around the doors. The Marvel X is 23mm longer and 84mm wider than the MG Hector, but also 100mm shorter in height.

The interior is made of handmade leather, which lines the seats, steering wheel, and dashboard. A 12.3-inch digital driver’s display shows the speed, power usage, and a small image of the car in its lane when using the driver assistance features. The carmaker claims the air conditioning system in this car is 50 per cent more efficient than other conventional ACs. An AliOS-powered Zebra voice recognition system is also a part of the package.

Underpinning the MG Marvel X is an all-aluminium chassis, which was developed in conjunction with German carmakers. The EV has four driving modes and a myriad of driver assistance features. Lane-keeping assist and steering assist work in conjunction with adaptive cruise control, six cameras, and 12 radar sensors to autonomously drive the car for short periods, both at city and highway speeds. Its parking sensor can learn commonly taken routes and park itself in familiar parking lots. If that doesn’t work, the Marvel X’s steering, forward and reverse movement can be remotely controlled from outside the car using a smartphone app.

Power comes from electric motors at the rear wheels or on all four wheels. The combined power and torque output of the rear-drive model is 186PS and 410Nm, while the all-wheel-drive model gets 300PS and 665Nm. The carmaker claims a 0-100kmph time of 7.9 seconds for the 2-wheel-drive model and 4.8 seconds for the AWD.

The motors draw power from a 52.5kWh battery. Roewe claims the SUV can go 500km on a single charge if cruising constantly at 60kmph. The NEDC claimed range is 403km for the 2WD model and 370km for the AWD. It takes the batteries 40 minutes to charge to 80 per cent using a DC fast charger. An AC wall-mounted fast charger can charge it up in 8.5 hours.

At the moment, MG has not disclosed any plans to launch the Marvel X in India. In case it does get launched in India, expect prices upwards of Rs 30 lakh for the luxury SUV. Its features, long range, and a suite of driver assistance and safety features make the Marvel X a bargain compared to European luxury EVs.
