  • The Hyperscreen will debut with the EQS, which will launch in the first half of 2021.

  • The display will span almost the entire dash, even featuring a display area for the co-driver.

  • The AI-powered unit will offer personalisation, and connectivity across multiple devices.

  • Smartphones and other devices will be capable of controlling vehicle and infotainment functions.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its latest technological advancement in the MBUX department at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show. The German carmaker showed-off a mega 56-inch ultra-wide curved display called the MBUX Hyperscreen, which will debut with the all-electric EQS luxury sedan.

Almost stretching the entire width of the dashboard between the A-pillars, the Hyperscreen will feature the driver’s instrument cluster, the infotainment, and other features including a display area for the passenger, all in one single unit. The entertainment functions of the display area on the passenger’s side are only functional during the journey, depending on the country-specific legal regulations. If the passenger seat is unoccupied, that part of the screen displays a decorative graphic.

It will be powered by artificial intelligence (AI), offering multiple connectivity options across smartphones and wireless devices. These devices can be used to control vehicle functions such as unlocking the doors and cabin pre-cooling, infotainment functions, and comfort features. The AI operation will also allow for constant learning of preferences and a personalized experience.

Ambient lighting below the screen appears to give it a floating effect. The screen utilises OLED technology and will feature a blue/orange colour scheme throughout. This latest advancement comes as part of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) suite, which has been utilised in Mercedes-Benz vehicles since 2018 when it debuted in the A-Class. The second-gen MBUX, featuring preference-learning capabilities, debuted recently in the new S-Class.

On the geekier side, the screen consists of three layers. 12 actuators are placed beneath the screen for haptic feedback. It is powered by 8 CPU cores, 24-gigabyte RAM and boasts a RAM bandwidth of 46.4 Gbps. The screen is flanked on either side by air vents which are integrated into the display.

Following the reveal of the Hyperscreen, Mercedes-Benz is gearing up for the debut of the EQA, the carmaker’s first all-electric compact SUV. This will be followed by the launch of the EQS, which will be the first to get the Hyperscreen, in the first half of 2021.
