4,185 units of the Indian Scout range manufactured between 2017 and 2018 are being recalled in the US over a fault in the Anti-lock Braking System

Indian Motorcycle USA has issued a safety recall of the Indian Scout, Scout Bobber and the Scout Sixty over a fault in the ABS unit. 4,185 units manufactured between 9 January 2017 and 14 June 2018 are said to have been affected. Only the ABS variants of the motorcycles are affected. As per NHSTA’s (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) recall report, the process of filling brake system fluid may not have been up to quality standards. Consequently, a small amount of air may have remained within the brake system, which may reduce the braking performance, and increase the risk of a crash. Affected brakes may feel ‘soft’ to use, indicating the possible presence of defect.

The cruiser maker will notify owners with the affected VIN, and dealers will bleed the front and rear anti-lock brake system, free of charge, to remove any residual air which may be present in the system. The recall is expected to begin this month. We expect Indian Motorcycle to make an announcement for the Scout models in India too, should the issue exist. It was also reported last month that Indian Motorcycle is considering to shift some of its plants serving the European market out of USA to avoid retaliatory tariffs imposed by the European Union.

The Scout product range is the entry-level family of Indian Motorcycle, and prices start from Rs 11 lakh for the Scout Sixty, the most affordable of the lot. The cult bikemaker launched the Scout Bobber last year, and here’s our review of the motorcycle.
