The first-gen Mahindra Thar cemented its reputation as a rugged, no-nonsense, off-road machine. However, it fell behind modern cars in terms of features. However, Mahindra seems to be working on changing that image with the upcoming 2020 Thar. Latest spy shots of the sturdy off-roader reveals various premium components such as alloy wheels and LED tail lights. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

While earlier test mules of the Thar were spotted with basic bulb-type tail lamps, the latest images suggest that the final production version could feature LED units. These images also reveal new five-spoke alloy wheels (including the spare wheel) that look like a direct lift from the current-gen Scorpio. For reference, the Scorpio comes with 235/65 R17 tyres, which are a size up from the first-gen Thar’s 235/70 R16 wheels.

Apart from that, the 2020 Thar looks similar to its predecessor. That means traditional elements like the seven-slat grille and round headlamps will be retained in the new model. Apart from growing up in size, the new Thar also features butch looking bumpers and wheel arches. Even more interesting is the fact that this test mule features a hardtop, which suggests that Mahindra might offer it as a proper variant this time around rather than an option.

Based on previous spy shots, we know that the new Thar’s interior and dashboard will be feature a completely reworked layout. Gone is the three-pod instrument cluster and in comes a new unit with a multi-info display. Apart from that, the seats now come with additional bolstering for more support while looking premium as well.

Earlier spy shots also suggest that the upcoming model could come with features like steering mounted audio controls, an audio system, front power windows and a manual HVAC. And thanks to stringent safety norms in the country, we expect the new Thar to get dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, driver and co-driver seatbelt warning as well as a high speed alert.

Under the hood, the 2020 Thar is expected to come with a 2.0-litre BS6-compliant diesel engine. Power and torque figures are expected to be in the range of 140PS and 300Nm while transmission duties will be held by a 6-speed manual. Apart from that, a four-wheel-drive transfer case with low range gearbox will be present if you wish to do some serious off-roading.

The new Mahindra Thar is expected to be revealed at the 2020 Auto Expo next year and is likely to be launched a couple of months afterwards. Considering the significant amount of updates on the new Thar, expect it to cost more than the final edition Thar 700, which is priced at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Currently, the Thar rivals the Force Gurkha. But considering the fact that the second-gen model is expected to be more premium, we expect the new Thar to be in a league of its own.
