Volkswagen will soon launch the Golf in its sportiest GTI avatar. Ahead of its launch in the coming months, it has been spotted uncamouflaged on our very own soil. The spy shot gives us a preview of what’s to come and what will likely be a very pleasant sight on our roads very soon. The sporty hatchback will be imported, and restricted to 250 units. So ahead of its launch, here are the top 5 things to know about the Golf GTI:
We could spot the side profile of the Golf GTI, which is longer than any of the popular hatchbacks of our country. For reference, it is as long as a Hyundai Creta. The 5-spoke alloy wheel design looks sporty and you also get red brake callipers for contrast. The front door features the “GTI” badging to remind you that it is not any ordinary Golf in which you are stepping inside. It also sits a tad lower than the regular Golf, giving it a more aggressive and hunkered down stance.
The rear features 3D LED tail lights that also get dynamic turn indicators. One can also spot the roof-mounted spoiler and the tip of the exhaust system which features dual outlets.
The overall design theme is aggressive and athletic which stays true to its sporty attributes. For a closer look at the design bits, check out this story.
While the interior of the India-spec version was not captured in the shot, we are aware that the global model which will be imported comes with a modern and tech-laded interior with plenty of features. The dashboard is dominated by a large 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system which even has Chat GPT integration for voice commands. The sporty hatchback comes with a GTI-specific digital instrument cluster and sporty red inserts. It also gets sports seats with chunkier bolstering, which should keep you in place when you wish to push the hatchback around corners.
The other top features include a 10.25-inch driver’s display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a heads-up display, multi-zone climate control, powered and ventilated front seats, and multi-colour ambient lighting.
Safety amenities include a suite of ADAS features, multiple airbags, electronic stability control (ESP), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and an electronic parking brake.
There is no compromise in this department. The Golf GTI comes with a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces a juicy 265 PS and 370 Nm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic which delivers power to the front wheels. Foot on the pedal, and you can reach the 100 kmph mark in just 5.9 seconds before maxing out at 250 kmph.
This being a sporty hatchback gets tweaks underneath the skin for a more involving drive experience. That includes a stiffer suspension setup, quicker steering rack and upgraded brakes.
The Golf GTI is expected to be priced from around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price, it will go up against the Mini Cooper S.
