Before GTA 6, we are getting the Volkswagen Golf GTI! A truly capable hatchback is set to be launched in India in the coming weeks. However, only a few lucky ones will be able to get it, as the sporty hatchback will be imported as a CBU and be available in limited numbers.
In fact, the first batch has already been sold out and VW has stopped the bookings. Does that mean it is completely sold out? Well, we hope not, because we would want all the enthusiasts in India to get their hands on this hot hatch. But before that, here's what to expect from the Golf GTI:
The Golf GTI manages to grab attention without being too loud and asking for it. It is unlike any other hatchback on our roads, and its sporty styling with gloss finishes blends perfectly to make it look very desirable.
Talking about design elements, the Golf GTI sports a honeycomb grille, sporty red inserts and GTI badges to remind you of the exclusivity. Furthermore, the front bumper houses the five-piece LED light units, and you get sharp 18-inch alloy wheels that complement the overall design. The profile looks sleek, and the rear end looks sporty with elements such as a roof-mounted spoiler, a shark fin antenna and a dual exhaust system.
Open the doors and you are welcomed by a plush cabin which also feels solid, something that you would expect from a true German car. The dashboard is dominated by a large 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which runs on Volkswagen’s latest OS, featuring ChatGPT-enabled voice assistance.
It comes with tartan-patterned sport seats meant to provide the right amount of support that you would need if you plan to drive the car fast. The displays feature GTI-based graphics, and you also get GTI badges and red inserts all around the cabin to contribute to the sporty theme.
It comes with a 10.25-inch driver’s display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, powered and ventilated front seats, a heads-up display, multi-zone climate control, and multi-colour ambient lighting.
Safety bits include multiple airbags, a suite of ADAS features, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and an electronic parking brake.
The Golf GTI is the ultimate pocket rocket, featuring a 2-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that makes up to 265 PS and 370 Nm. The engine is mated to a quick-shifting 7-speed DSG, which delivers power to the front wheels. 0-100 kmph? In just 5.9 seconds. The unit is also tuner-friendly, and opens up the possibilities of mods! A simple tune could see the power go over 300 PS!
For sharp cornering and enhanced grip, it features an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock and progressive steering.
The Golf GTI is expected to retail at over Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), and will be a slightly more premium alternative to the Mini Cooper S.
The Golf GTI is a collector’s item, a hatchback that is built for enthusiasts. At over Rs 50 lakh, it won’t be the most practical choice, but it will offer performance and a drive experience like very few other cars at the price range can.
