E-cycles Simplified: Classifying the Different Types of E-cycles In India

Electric cycles, also known as e-bikes, have gained popularity in recent years as a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation. They are a great alternative to traditional cycles as they offer electric motor-powered pedal assistance, making them easier to ride in tougher terrains. In India, there are only two types of electric cycles currently on sale, classified based on their motor power, motor intervention and top speed.

Types of electric cycles in India:

1. Pedal assist 

The first type of e-cycles is the one with pedal assist. These cycles have a motor that kicks in only when you pedal and stops providing assistance once you cross a certain speed threshold. The motor is designed to assist the rider, but not to take over completely, thus letting you be more in control. Examples include the Motovolt Kivo Easy with a range of up to 45km in pedal assist mode. 

2. Throttle and pedal assist 

These cycles are similar to the previous type, albeit with an important addition. They feature a throttle in addition to pedal assistance. Throttle mode allows the rider to control the speed of the bike without pedalling. The top speed for these cycles using throttle alone is capped at 25kmph, but you can reach a much higher top speed by pedalling, especially with gears.

The EMotorad X1, X2, X3 and the Firefox Adventron are some examples of such electric cycles. Prices start at Rs 24,999. At this price, you get a decent set of equipment, from a full hardtail MTB with throttle and pedal assistance to a removable battery and puncture-resistant tyres. 

The Desert Eagle and Nighthawk fall in the premium end of the spectrum. For instance, the Nighthawk is priced at Rs 4.75 lakh, but it features premium forks with 120mm of travel, app connectivity and puncture-resistant tyres. It also offers a claimed range of 105km and a 17.5Ah battery. As for the Desert Eagle, it gets a 150mm travel fork and Tektro 2-piston brakes at both ends. Both cycles feature a lightweight full-aluminium frame, which contributes to their high price tag.

Which type of cycle is meant for whom?

Pedal assist 

These cycles are best suited for riders who want to get a workout while also getting help on hills or against the wind. They are ideal for riders who want to maintain their fitness level while still enjoying the convenience of an electric cycle.

Throttle and pedal assist 

These cycles are best suited for riders who want a bit more assistance, but still want to get some exercise. They are ideal for riders who may not have the fitness level to tackle hills or headwinds on a traditional bicycle. They are also ideal for office commutes as you exert much less energy when compared to regular cycles.

Approximate Cost:

The cost of electric cycles in India varies depending on the type and brand. Cycles with pedal assist typically cost between Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000. Whereas cycles featuring throttle and pedal assist can cost anywhere between Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000; and even Rs 1 lakh, in some cases, depending on the type of equipment. It’s important to note that costs of electric cycles in India are relatively lower compared to other countries.
