It turned out to be an April Fool’s joke but the technology could turn into reality in a few years

Ola Solo Unveiled

Ola Electric teased an autonomous self-balancing scooter, called the Ola Solo, on April 1, 2024. Judging by the date and the features shown in the teaser, it looks like an April Fool’s prank from the EV maker.

The Ola Solo is claimed to be an autonomous scooter with self-balancing technology. Other features mentioned in the video include a Summon mode through which you can summon the Ola Solo from where it’s parked and the scooter comes to your location on its own. It gets a Vishram mode where the electric scooter finds the nearest Hypercharger whenever it starts running out of charge. Also, the Krutum AI allows you to interact with the scooter in 22 languages. These kinds of features made it look like Ola was playing an April Fool’s joke with the announcement.

And Bhavish Aggarwal did confirm afterwards that the video was indeed meant as a joke but also clarified that the EV maker is actually working on the technology showcased in the earlier video and have also started work on developing prototypes. In a new video posted along with the clarification, the Ola Solo can be seen moving on its own without a rider. Now, from the looks of it, it seems like the technology behind the self-balancing scooter is still in its development stage. Also, it is quite difficult to develop autonomous driving technology suited for Indian driving conditions. So it is safe to say that a self driving scooter’s launch is still a few years away. This is not the first time that an Indian EV maker has showcased a self-balancing scooter as Liger Mobility unveiled the Liger X and Liger X Plus at Auto Expo 2023

In other news, Ola Electric recorded 53,000 registrations in March 2024, which is its all-time highest-ever registration numbers in a single month. These numbers just beat its previous record of 35,000 registrations in a single month during February 2024. The EV maker recorded about 1,00,000 registrations during the months of December 2023, January and February 2024. This record number of registrations for the past two months can be largely attributed to the discounts of up to Rs 25,000 announced by Ola Electric across its lineup which started from February 2024 onwards. The offers were earlier set to be available till the end of February but have now been extended till April 5, 2024. Also, the manufacturer has multiple offerings in different price ranges, so people with variating budgets can be catered by the manufacturer. This factor would have also contributed to the registration numbers.
