In its latest round of crash tests, Global NCAP has tested the Maruti Celerio and Ciaz under its latest protocols, with the Celerio scoring 3 stars and the Ciaz trailing with just a 1-star rating. But what led to these disappointing scores? Let’s take a look:
Score: 18.04/34.00
The Maruti Celerio’s 6 airbag version received 18.04 points out of a maximum of 34 points, earning it a 3-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection. Notably, this score is marginally better than the 2 airbag variants tested previously, although it still lags behind rivals like the Tata Tiago.

The tests also showed that the Celerio offered weak to marginal protection for the driver’s chest, tibia and feet, while the results were better for the head, knees and neck. On the other hand, it offered good protection for the front passenger’s head and neck, with adequate to marginal protection otherwise.
It also scored 8.05 points in the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier Test, with a 9.993 score in the Side Movable Barrier Test, while it still passed in the Side Pole Impact Test. The bodyshell integrity was found to be unstable.
Score: 18.57/49.00
As for the Child Occupant Protection category, the Celerio scored 18.57 points out of a maximum of 49, earning it a 2-star rating. It scored a poor 6 points out of 24 for the Dynamic Score, while the CRS installation score was rated at 10.57 out of a maximum of 12 points. It also scored a very poor 2 out of 13 for the vehicle assessment score, leaving a lot of room for improvement.

Notably, Global NCAP also tested the 2 airbag versions of the Celerio, which scored 2 stars in the Adult Occupant Protection category, and just 1 star in the Child Occupant Protection category. However, this rating is not relevant to the Indian market anymore as Maruti sells the Celerio with 6 airbags as standard.
Score: 20.86/34.00
Maruti’s Ciaz scored 20.86 points out of a maximum 34 in the Adult Occupant Protection category, giving it the lowest possible 1-star rating.

The sedan offered poor protection for the driver’s feet, while the knees, tibias and chest were rated marginal to adequate. The front passenger showed much better results, however, with a good rating for the tibias, knees, head and neck, with an adequate rating for the chest.
Further, it scored 7.36 points in the Front Offset Deformable Barrier Test, 12.49 points in the Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test, while the absence of side or curtain airbags meant it did not even qualify for the Side Pole Impact Test. The bodyshell integrity of the Ciaz was also rated as unstable.
Score: 28.57/49.00
In the Child Occupant Category, the Ciaz received a much better 3-star rating, with it scoring 28.57 points out of a maximum 49. It scored a full 24 out of 24 as its Dynamic Score, while also being rated with 4.57 out of 12 for the CRS installation tests. The vehicle assessment score was 0.00 out of 13, due to the non-availability of three-point seatbelts for the rear centre passenger.

In recent times, Maruti Suzuki products like the e Vitara, Victoris, Dzire, Invicto and even the Baleno have scored respectable crash test ratings, but with the two cars tested now, the safety narrative takes a back seat, which can hurt the carmaker’s attempts to improve in this department.
