Lamborghini sold more Aventadors than all its previous V12 models combined

Launched back in 2011, the Lamborghini Aventador paved the way for what a supercar should be – fast, loud, and aggressive in-your-face styling that intimidates you every time you look at it. The perfect recipe for a poster car and Lamborghini had a history of doing those really well. Unfortunately, the naturally-aspirated V12-powered spaceship has reached the end of its line as Lamborghini has ceased its production.

End of an era

Over the 11 years, we’ve seen various iterations of the V12-powered raging bull, which collectively sold more units than all of the marque’s previous V12 models clubbed together. That goes to say how popular the model was. The Italian marque tuned the raging bull’s 6.5-litre V12 throughout its production years to produce a maximum of 780P, an 80PS bump over the first Aventador. It even had a brief claim over the title of the fastest production car lap time at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

Lamborghini said its goodbyes by launching the final iteration, the Aventador Ultimae. The swansong of its range offers a blend of the best of all derivatives into one avatar, boasting the most powerful 780PS NA (naturally aspirated) V12 in a Lamborghini.

What’s next?

The successor to the Aventador's throne is already under development as a test mule was spotted testing near the brand’s base at Sant’Agata Bolognese recently. It too is expected to be powered by a V12 engine, but paired to a hybrid system. It’ll be interesting to see whether the upcoming model will live up to the legendary stature of its predecessor because it certainly has its work cut out.

Enthusiasts have lamented the end of production for Aventador, which just might have been one of the last unadulterated V12s in a raging bull. It was inevitable and it will likely be replaced by something faster and maybe even more outlandish in terms of design, but it just won’t be the same. ‘End of an era’ is a phrase often thrown around loosely. However, in this case, we mean it in every sense.
