Hyundai has taken the wraps off its new Boulder Concept SUV at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, marking a strategic turn for the company dipping into the world of hardcore off-roading for the first time. The concept SUV carries a rugged design, previewing Hyundai’s first-ever body-on-frame platform, and it also hints at the possibility of a future SUV to be introduced in the future. The Boulder Concept has been built with adventure in mind, and it showcases a new direction for the brand, focusing on toughness, capability, and lifestyle appeal.
Here’s everything you should know about the Hyundai Boulder Concept:
The Boulder Concept is Hyundai’s attempt at offering a rugged, off-road-focused SUV that can serve as a preview of the brand’s upcoming body-on-frame architecture, something that Hyundai has never done in the past. The concept not only displays Hyundai’s new SUV, but it also previews Hyundai’s first mid-size pickup truck, which is expected to arrive by 2030 and will share the same ladder-frame underpinnings.

Hyundai’s current lineup consists only of monocoque models, while the Boulder Concept SUV is designed for serious off-road use, with proper towing, hauling, and trail capacity. The Boulder will rival many established off-roaders across the globe.
Speaking of the design, the Boulder Concept features a boxy, upright, and old-school SUV stance based on Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design language, emphasizing strength and durability. The front fascia features a wide grille, at the edges of which are the squared LED headlights.

At the rear, the design of the taillights is similar to the headlights, and the tailgate also has a spare wheel mounted on it. What further enhances its trail capabilities are massive 37-inch off-road tyres and aggressive approach and departure angles to tackle any obstacle in its way.

The side profile boasts unique safari-style windows that enhance visibility during outdoor adventures, while the rear sports a tailgate which can be opened from either side, which adds to the overall practicality and versatility of the car. It also features a roll-down rear window, which looks interesting. We already know that this platform is ready for further customizations by Hyundai to launch future SUVs.
The Boulder Concept is primarily built for the American market. While its design, planning, and development will also be done in the US using locally sourced materials.
The Boulder might just be a concept for now, but it clearly shows a production-ready direction and Hyundai’s future vision. The production version of this concept is expected to hit the roads by 2030 and would likely be toned down in design. But it would still retain its rugged fundamentals and a strong and dominating stance. Apart from an upcoming SUV, the biggest takeaway of this concept is the upcoming mid-size pickup truck by Hyundai, which is also expected by 2030. The pickup would use this same body-on-frame platform.

Lifestyle off-roaders are admired a lot globally, and given this popularity, Hyundai could eventually expand this platform into multiple models, including SUVs and pickup trucks aimed at markets apart from the US as well.

The Hyundai Boulder is expected to rival cars like the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco. Once a pickup truck based on the same platform is unveiled, it will take on cars like the Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and the Ford Ranger.
While we are unlikely to see the production version of the Boulder concept making its way to India, Hyundai has announced an off-roader based on a body-on-frame chassis as part of its future plans, which were revealed late last year. Given our specific and unique market conditions, the Indian-version could be based on the same platform but is likely to have a smaller form factor.

This new SUV will likely rival cars like the Mahindra Thar Roxx, Force Gurkha 5-door and the Maruti Jimny.
Hyundai seems to be planning to step out of its comfort zone with the Boulder Concept, and that is exactly what makes this SUV and new platform more exciting. Hyundai has always been known for its urban-friendly SUVs, and a shift towards hardcore off-roaders is not easy, but this concept shows that the brand is serious about playing in the big leagues. If Hyundai manages to retain even half of this rugged appeal in production, it could shake up a segment long dominated by elite rivals.
