Ducati Desmo250 MX Launched Internationally

Ducati has officially entered the 250cc motocross class with the Desmo250 MX, a competition-focused machine featuring a high-revving desmodromic engine and electronics derived from its larger 450cc sibling.

Desmodromic Engine & Power

Powering the Desmo250 MX is a completely new 249cc single-cylinder engine built around Ducati's desmodromic valve actuation system. Conventional engines rely on springs to close valves; the desmodromic system uses a second cam and rocker arm instead, closing them mechanically. That precision lets the engine hit a massive 15,000rpm redline. Peak power lands at 44.5PS at 12,500 rpm.

The design traces directly to Ducati's superbike programme. At 81 x 48.4mm, the bore and stroke match one cylinder of the Panigale V4 R's engine exactly. The engine uses titanium intake valves and steel exhaust valves. The drive goes through a 5-speed gearbox with an upshift-only quickshifter, paired with a hydraulically operated Brembo clutch.

Traction Control & Predictive Systems

The brand has equipped the Desmo250 MX with electronics inherited directly from its flagship 450cc racer.

Mid-size motocross bikes rarely get traction control. Ducati has changed that with the Desmo250 MX, fitting Ducati Traction Control (DTC) carried over from development work on the larger Desmo450 MX project bike. On loose surfaces, DTC manages rear tyre slip, keeping forward momentum steady. In shifting motocross track conditions, that matters.

Traction control comes paired with a Predictive Maintenance system. Both carry over from the 450cc Ducati motocross bike. Component life is logged continuously. The system tracks wear data and flags potential issues before they become critical failures during a race, letting teams and riders plan ahead rather than react.

Chassis, Suspension & Agility

Ducati built the Desmo250 MX around a perimeter frame and aluminium swingarm. Motocross teams have long used this pairing for its mix of rigidity and feel. 

Fitted Showa components at both ends, both the front and rear shock absorber, carry a Kashima Coating. A low-friction surface finish that smooths response over small bumps and resists heat build-up across long motos. 

Competition Testing & Availability

Ducati confirms the Desmo250 MX was developed and validated through direct competition in the Italian Prestige MX2 championship. It has been launched internationally at the price of USD 10,595 (approx Rs 9.99 lakh).

Ducati skipped closed-door development entirely. Factory rider Alessandro Lupino ran the Desmo250 MX through a full 2024 Italian Prestige MX2 championship season, and race results fed directly back into the engine, chassis, and electronics. Competing against rivals, not a test track, is where Ducati gathered its data.

Ducati calls it "race on Sunday, sell on Monday," meaning track-tested solutions carry over directly to production bikes. The Desmo250 MX itself has already been run hard on the track. Its development follows the larger Desmo450 MX, with Ducati now fielding two motocross models in the mid-size and full-size segments.
