VW Tayron R-Line Drive Impressions: It’s NOT A Fortuner Rival!

Volkswagen is all set to bring its global three-row SUV offering, the Tayron, to Indian shores! Recently spied testing on our roads, the Tayron will sit above the Tiguan in VW’s India line-up and is expected to arrive just in time for the festive season.
So, what exactly is this big German SUV all about? Let’s break it down.
Think of the Tayron as the grown-up sibling of the Tiguan. Originally offered in China, the Tayron has now evolved into a global product, and its India-bound version could be the long-wheelbase, 7-seater variant that could replace the Tiguan AllSpace.

Based on the MQB Evo platform, the same as the new-gen Skoda Kodiaq, the Tayron brings a more spacious cabin, more features, and a design language that blends understated German elegance with SUV ruggedness.
Our little birdie tells us that the Tayron could be headed to India, and is expected to launch sometime in late 2025, just after Diwali. The timing, i.e. around November, is no coincidence; VW might want to cash in on the festive buying sentiment.

To make the Tayron more price-competitive, Volkswagen could likely bring it in as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit and assemble it locally at its Aurangabad facility. Expect pricing to hover around the Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom) mark, putting it right in the sweet spot for luxury SUV buyers who want space, features, and a premium badge.
The test mule that was recently spotted on Indian roads appears to be the R-Line trim, sans-camouflage.
The SUV was seen equipped with projector LED headlamps with an LED DRL strip up front, connected LED tail-lamps at the rear, and large dual-tone alloy wheels.

While the India-spec feature list hasn’t been confirmed, the R-Line variant overseas comes loaded with goodies, and we expect most of them to make it here.
The global-spec Tayron’s cabin is sleek and tech-forward, with a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, and ambient lighting.
Other expected goodies include a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, and powered, ventilated front seats.

Safety is taken care of in typical VW fashion with Level 2 ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking, making the list extensive.
Under the hood, the India-spec Tayron could likely feature Volkswagen’s familiar 2-litre turbo-petrol TSI engine, producing around 204 PS. It willl come mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox and feature VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

While international markets also get diesel and plug-in hybrid variants, the petrol-only route is the most probable choice for India, in line with VW’s current strategy.
If and when it launches, the Volkswagen Tayron will compete with a niche but capable set of rivals. The Skoda Kodiaq will be its closest sibling and rival, with others like the Jeep Meridian and the Toyota Fortuner may also be cross-shopped by buyers looking for size and price parity.

To sum it up, the Volkswagen Tayron is expected to bring a blend of German engineering, premium features, and family-friendly practicality.

If Volkswagen gets the pricing and feature list right, the Tayron could be a dark horse worth waiting for, especially if you’re shopping for something plush, powerful, and just a little bit different from the mainstream while still being able to carry a family.
