Want a 7-seater Volkswagen? Your wish might just come true. Volkswagen has given us the first teaser of its upcoming Tayron SUV, which will be the brand’s new flagship in India, and it could come sooner than you thought! Let’s take a look at what the teaser shows, and what we know so far about the new Tayron:
While the teaser does not reveal much, we get to see the lighting signatures of the Tayron, which will include connected LED headlamp and taillamp clusters. It also reveals an interesting detail, which comes in the form of illuminated VW logos at the front and rear, which is a first for the brand in India.

What we also get to see is a slim and rounded off design for the headlamps, which are very similar to the Tiguan R-Line that is on sale presently. However, the taillamp cluster is sleeker with a block pattern for the illumination.

Sharing its underpinnings with the Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron is all set to be the new VW range-topper and is likely to feature a 7-seat layout inside. Given the expected duration of the CBU route, we can safely speculate that the exterior and interior design will likely remain similar to the global model as well.

Inside, the Tayron gets a free-standing 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system taking centre stage, along with a textured insert on the passenger side of the dashboard. For the second-row it gets a bench seat layout. While Volkswagen is yet to confirm the India-spec details about the upholstery and interior colours, expect a lot of elements and trim pieces to be shared with the Tiguan.

In terms of features, globally it comes equipped with a panoramic sunroof, the aforementioned 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, ambient lighting, heated front seats with massage function, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, three-zone climate control and a powered tailgate.
Safety-wise, it comes equipped with 9 airbags, a Level 2 ADAS suite, electronic stability control, all-wheel disc brakes, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, tyre pressure monitoring system and hill descent control.

Under the hood, the Tayron is likely to be powered by the same powertrain as the Tiguan R-Line. Here are its detailed specifications:
|
Engine |
2-litre turbo-petrol |
|
Transmission |
7-speed dual-clutch automatic |
|
Power (PS) |
204 PS |
|
Torque (Nm) |
320 Nm |
|
Drivetrain |
All-wheel drive |

While we await the official confirmation, Volkswagen is expected to launch the Tayron on 28 January. It is likely to be priced from Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom). The Tayron will compete with SUVs such as the Skoda Kodiaq, Toyota Fortuner and the upcoming MG Majestor.

With a 7-seater layout and the same sporty underpinnings as the Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron is sure to add some more excitement to the full-size SUV segment. However, Volkswagen must ensure realistic pricing if it is looking to grab a good chunk of sales from more established rivals.
