Pune-based electric motorcycle maker Tork Motors has just launched a new variant of its Kratos R. Called the ‘Urban’ trim, it is priced at Rs 1.67 lakh ex-showroom Pune, making it Rs 20,000 more affordable than the standard Kratos R.

This Urban trim uses the exact same hardware as the standard Kratos R, so it still gets Tork’s patented ‘Axial Flux’ motor which has a peak output of 9kW and 38Nm. Even the battery capacity stays the same at 4.0kWh. Other hardware such as its 17-inch wheels, disc brakes at both ends with CBS, telescopic front fork and rear monoshock are unchanged too, as is the kerb weight of 140kg.
What Tork has done to keep costs in check is dial back some features, so that this Kratos R Urban is primarily suited for city riding. So there’s only one riding mode, City (no Eco or Sports, or even Reverse like on the standard), which limits top speed to 70kmph and a range of 100km. In Sports mode, the standard Kraos R can do a top speed of 105kmph, while in Eco, Tork claims a real world range of 120km (the IDC range is rated at 180km).

Other features like In-app navigation, Vehicle Locator, Anti-theft & Geo-Fencing, Motor Walk Assist, Crash Alert, Live Dash over Bluetooth and Ride Analytics have been skipped on the Urban trim. Even OTA updates have been limited to only essential updates. But when you do buy the Urban trim of the Kratos R, all these features will be available for use for a period of 30 days, after which, from what we understand, these will be disabled. However, owners will be able to opt back into all these features for a price of Rs 20,000 within six months, which if not opted for, will stay disabled.
With the recent drastic drop in the FAME II subsidy, electric 2-wheeler makers have been trying different approaches to keep initial purchase costs low, just to get potential buyers through the door.
