The Tata Harrier EV has become the talk of the town and rightly so, after its recent launch and videos of the SUV performing insane things that not every car can do. At Tata’s Quad Day, the Harrier EV displayed its extreme capabilities on and off the road, and had us all go “woww”. By now, you might already be aware of its features and other aspects, so in this story, we take you through the 5 insane things that the Harrier EV can do without breaking a sweat!
Yes, the Harrier EV is a true SUV in every sense, but it does not really accelerate like your regular SUV. Instead, it offers the attributes of a hot hatch, taking you from 0-100 kmph in a whopping 6.3 seconds! Yes, it is a heavy SUV with over 2,000 kgs of weight, but with almost 400 PS of power, which by the way is Ford Mustang GT territory, acceleration feels quick, and that will definitely appeal to the enthusiast inside you. It also gets a boost mode, which is a first-time feature for a Tata car!
The Harrier EV’s closest rival, the Mahindra XEV 9e, takes 6.8 seconds to hit the 100 kmph mark, and while that too is respectable, it is around half a second slower than the Harrier EV.
At the Quad Day, the Harrier EV was seen performing multiple off-road courses and challenges to display its capabilities on unpaved surfaces. Watching it perform the stunts felt like it was a Defender inside dressed up as a Harrier EV!
Driving on the Rock Bed was a rather easy task with the Harrier EV doing all the work in the Rock Crawl mode with little to no inputs from the driver. In the Axle Twister Challenge, the suspension and chassis were put to the test, and the Harrier EV was able to cross it without losing traction.
The Harrier EV was also able to effortlessly perform the steep incline and decline challenge as well, and credit can be given to the low-end torque generated from the dual motors.
Furthermore, the Camel Hump showcased that the Harrier EV’s approach and departure angle is almost similar to some of the off-roaders, and driving downwards during the Stairs Climb challenge gave us an idea of how strong the Harrier EV’s brakes were!
Experts from Tata also performed a water wading stunt where the SUV’s 600 mm water wading capacity was put to the test. What was even cooler? While one Harrier EV was performing the water-wading test, another Harrier EV flew over it from one surface to another!
So now we know that all the talk about the Harrier EV’s off-roading capabilities was not just a marketing strategy, but Tata actually walked the talk and has provided us with a family SUV that can do more than what it is meant to do.
While most cars nowadays can achieve triple-digit figures with ease, very few can do it in a calm and composed manner without making the passengers feel uncomfortable at any point. The Harrier EV not only builds up speed effortlessly, but sits at triple-digit speeds like a sports car. Its independent multi-link rear suspension with frequency-dependent damper helps in making the ride smooth and stable at high speeds.
The Harrier EV might not really be a luxury SUV, but it gives you that experience, at least a hint of it! One such luxury feature which Tata displayed was the Auto-park assist feature, which locates an empty parking space and automatically parks the SUV into that space without you having to worry about the cars or obstacles around the parking spot. You can use this feature sitting inside the car, and also from outside the car using the key fob.
Here’s the Harrier EV’s park assist feature in action:
It also gets a segment-first 540-degree camera, which assists you while off-roading or when you really want to watch out for those deep potholes. Moreover, its digital IRVM looks like it has been borrowed right from the Defender! It gives a view of what’s behind the car using a camera mounted on the shark-fin antenna. The eIRVM also doubles up as a dashcam, proving to be a crucial safety feature during unforeseen situations.
The Harrier EV gets all your safety bits like 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, and a full suite of ADAS tech, which is actually tuned for India and is quite useful. Along with having the Tata safety DNA, it also has a very strong chassis, which adds to the robustness and strength of the SUV. It would be safe to say that it is almost as safe as a Volvo car!
Tata demonstrated the Harrier EV’s strength by placing a 1.5-tonne heavy container on top of the SUV’s body frame. Moreover, Tata also conducted a hanging test where the SUV’s chassis was shown hanging from a height and an actual production-spec version was attached to it. This left us impressed, and hats off to Tata for providing the Harrier EV with the chassis that it needed. A Deja Vu of the famous Volvo stunt! Here's a fun take on Tata's stunt:
Tata seems to have gotten it right with the Harrier EV, and almost every box has been ticked. What’s impressive is that Tata has not provided us with a soft-roader which is suitable mainly for city commutes, but instead given us the complete package with an all-wheel drive system and powerful electric motors.
The Harrier EV’s prowess and strengths, including the off-road hardware and premium features, are not just mere gimmicks but also useful things to have. So, judging by the first few impressions, the Harrier EV appears to be a winner for Tata. We wait to see how Tata prices the SUV, as currently only the entry-level pricing has been revealed, and that starts from Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Is the Harrier EV your multi-purpose SUV? We think it is!
