The Kia Sonet could feature same powertrain options as the Hyundai Venue and will feature Hyundai-Kia’s latest iMT clutchless manual transmission

  • New teaser reveals the Sonet’s front and rear design.

  • The Sonet will compete with the Hyundai Venue and other sub-4 metre SUVs.

  • It will be Kia’s third offering in India after the Seltos SUV and Carnival MPV.

Kia has released the first  teaser video ahead of the global reveal of its sub-4m SUV, the Sonet, which is scheduled to be held on August 7. A previous teaser image confirmed the reveal date and the design of the front fascia. The latest clip features the front and rear LED lights which look similar to the concept showcased at Auto Expo 2020.

This short clip with the tagline ‘Wild By Design’ draws comparisons between the Sonet’s sharp LED DRLs and the canines of a vampire. Another design element confirmed by the clip is the bar connecting the two LED tail lights which does not light up unlike the concept.

Spy shots of what seemed like a base variant of the SUV indicated other design elements such as black gloss inserts flanking the rear windscreen and a massive faux skid plate. It will boast a segment-topping feature list led by Kia’s UVO connected car technology. Expect a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, a 360-degree parking camera, auto AC, and a sunroof as well.

The Sonet could share its powertrain options with Hyundai’s sub-4m SUV, the Venue. These include the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol motor, and the 1.5-litre diesel unit. The main highlight will be Hyundai-Kia’s new 6-speed iMT clutchless manual transmission which will be offered alongside the standard 5-speed/6-speed MT and 7-speed DCT.

The Sonet will be Kia’s third offering in India following the Seltos and the Carnival. It will lock horns with the Hyundai Venue, the Ford EcoSport, the Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. It is expected to be priced from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 11.5 lakh.
