XUV300 Launch Tomorrow: Will Rival Brezza, Nexon and EcoSport

Mahindra is all set to launch its latest contender in the hotly contested sub 4-metre SUV segment tomorrow. The XUV300 is Mahindra’s latest attempt to be competitive in the sub-4 SUV space and it is Mahindra’s best attempt by far.

The XUV300 is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli but has been reworked for the Indian market. While it is significantly shorter than its South Korean cousin, it sports the longest wheelbase in its segment. The boot however is rather small for a car of its size. The design is quintessentially Mahindra, with a few funky touches like a floating roof with dual-tone theme. It also comes with 17-inch alloys that add some premiumness to the design. And it boasts of features that none of its rivals do.

It boasts of 7 airbags, a first-in-segment dual-zone climate control and front and rear parking sensors. Other features include an electrically operated sunroof, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in navigation, keyless entry, push-button start and leatherette upholstery. But most of the aforementioned features are likely to be offered with the top of the line variant only. Speaking of variants, the XUV300 will be available in four: W4, W6, W8 and the range-topping W8 (O).  

As for the powertrains, the XUV will be offered with a choice of a diesel and a petrol engine. The diesel engine is the same 1.5-litre motor that dishes out 115PS of max power and 300Nm of peak torque, but gets a different turbo and gearing. The petrol engine on the other hand displaces 1.2-litres and makes 110PS and 200Nm of peak torque. Both engines will be mated to 6-speed manual gearboxes. Mahindra will not be offering the XUV with an automatic gearbox at launch.

If Mahindra wants to make a dent in this segment, the XUV300 will have to be priced aggressively. We expect it to be between Rs 8.0 lakh and Rs 12.0 lakh. It will rival the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport.
