The Volvo brand has always stood for safety, so when it comes to the Traffic System Achievement Award given out at this year's World Traffic Safety Symposium in New York, it is no surprise that Volvo walked away with the honours for their City Safety technology developed in house that helps avoid low speed collisions.

Volvo bags a Safety Award highlights

Volvo City Safety caters to collisions up to 30 km/h. Research has shown that approximately 75% of all collisions happen at speeds less than 30 km/h. This is mainly due to negligence and the driver of the car doesn't even brake in most cases. City Safety is an active safety system that senses an imminent collision such as a car suddenly braking in front, in turn it prepares the brakes. In the event that the driver does not apply the brakes, the system automatically takes charge and applies the brakes in order to slow the car down further and reduce the impact. At speeds less than 15 km/h (9 mph) City Safety can entirely avoid accidents, at speeds between 17 - 30 km/h (10-18 mph) the system applies brake force to reduce vehicle speed and help reduce occupant injuries and vehicle damage. Incidentally the first vehicle to get this technology will be the soon to be launched Volvo XC60.

The City Safety technology is touted to help eliminate whiplash injuries as well as reduce body damage to both vehicles involved in the accident. The direct impact of this technology will also reflect in the insurance industry where whiplash cases and body damage are the two most sought after claims when it comes to automobile insurance. To prove their point and show the benefits of this technology, Volvo is currently talking to a number of European insurance agencies in order to offer the customer a 30 percent discount on insurance premium provided that the vehicle is fitted with City Safety.
