Volkswagen have been in the business of sprucing up their hatchbacks for performance and then adding the GTI badge onto the back of them. The German car giant now plans to do exactly the same with their smallest offering the Up, albeit with an alphabet less

The Volkswagen Up was initially designed to be a small, economical hatchback for the urban environment. But as is the way with Volkswagen, they can’t seem to hold back from trying to make their hatchbacks go faster. Needless to say VW has revealed a sporty concept of their all new super mini, the Up.

Power will be upped from the standard 60ps to 100ps or more, while other modifications will include a wide honeycomb grille upfront, a wider front bumper incorporating air ducts to cool the front brakes (mind you these are not mere air ducts, they also come with daytime running LEDs). Other modifications include flared wheel arches with 17 inch alloys shod in 195-section tyres. At the back there is a deep roof spoiler to increase downforce, at the bottom there is an air diffuser with two tail pipes incorporated in both sides.

The GT Up is just a concept for now but going by the history of the car maker we would hopefully see a production version in the near future. As there is quite a market for these cars, expect the GT Up to come with lowered ride height as the standard car’s height would look pretty ungainly. Wonder what a bonkers version, with an ‘i’ in it would be like.
