Tata Motors will launch the Nexon Electric Vehicle (EV) in India, which could become India's most affordable electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) when it hits showrooms on January 28. We have already driven the Nexon EV, and you can read our first-drive review here. The Nexon EV will rival the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric once launched. It is likely to be priced upwards of Rs 15 lakh.
If you’re wondering why the SUV is expected to be pricier than the internal combustion Nexon, read our story here. It is built using Tata’s Ziptron technology and has an ARAI-backed range of 312km. We did a fun range test of our own (link to story). From what’s new to what’s familiar, here’s all you need to know about the new Tata Nexon EV:
Exterior Design
Compared to the previous-gen Nexon, the EV looks butch and modern. Its daytime running lights are cleanly integrated within the double-barrel headlamps. The Nexon EV looks identical to the 2020 Nexon, with the exception of the blue accents in place of white trim bits on the internal combustion model. An ‘EV’ badge sits on the grille and a ‘Ziptron’ badge adorns the tailgate.
Interior
Inside, there is leather on the seats, piano black trim on the dashboard, and a sunroof. A rotary selector for the drive mode sits on the centre console. Its semi-digital instrument cluster is 7-inches diagonal and displays range, battery charge state, and power consumption. Blue accents around the air vents and on the centre console remind the passenger that this is an EV. The cabin feel will not leave you wanting for spending Rs 15 lakh on this SUV.
Powerplant
Under its floor sits a 30.2kWh battery. The Nexon EV’s front-mounted electric motor is good for 129PS of power and 245Nm of torque. 0-100kmph comes in a claimed 9.9 seconds. Our times were slightly better. Does this mean the Nexon can out-drag a Kona?
Features
The Nexon EV will be available in three variants: XM, XZ+, and XZ+ Lux. In its top spec, the Nexon EV gets a sunroof, cruise control, a 7-inch infotainment screen, leatherette seats, automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers. All variants of the Nexon EV get ZConnect connected car features. For a trim-wise features list, head here.
Price
We expect the Nexon EV to be priced upwards of Rs 15 lakh. On-road prices will be much lower than petrol or diesel cars, given the lower GST rate for electric cars. States like Delhi also offer incentives of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for electric car owners. You can currently book the Nexon EV for Rs 21,000 on the Tata Nexon EV website.
