The most well known crash testing body, Global NCAP, has released the results of a new crash test of the Tata Nexon. Tata’s crossover has received a stellar 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests, making it the first 5-star safety rated car in India. The Nexon had previously received a safety rating of four stars, but Tata has since updated the safety tech on its crossover with a seatbelt reminder for the front occupants across the range. The rating makes the Nexon one of the safest cars in the country.

As per Global NCAP standards, each car is tested for adult and child occupant safety. The Nexon scored five stars for adult occupants, but the child safety was rated at three stars. Apart from the front offset rigid barrier test, the Nexon also passed a side impact test as a part of UN95 requirements.

Mahindra Marazzo NCAP

Global NCAP also crash tested the new Mahindra Marazzo which with its dual standard airbags, ABS and seatbelt reminder scored a 4-star rating for adult occupants and a 2-star rating for child safety. The lower rating was due to the lower chest protection and risk to the lower leg due to pedal displacement.

Here is the release issued by Global NCAP:

Global NCAP releases an update to its #SaferCarsForIndia campaign with two new crash test results today. Following recent four star safety announcements, the Tata Nexon becomes the first made in India, sold in India car to achieve Global NCAP’s coveted five star crash test rating. The Mahindra Marazzo also does well, achieving a four star result.

The Tata Nexon scored five stars for Adult Occupant Protection and three stars for Child Occupant Protection. Following the Nexon’s four star result earlier this year Tata has improved a number of safety features including making a Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) for driver and passenger a standard for all variants of the model. In addition the Nexon was required to pass a side impact test meeting UN95 side impact protection requirements (*).

The Mahindra Marazzo with standard double airbags, ABS, SBR for driver and ISOFIX anchorages, reached four stars in Adult Occupant Protection and two stars for Child Occupant Protection (**).

The model offers good protection for both adult head and neck, marginal protection for the driver chest and adequate protection for passenger chest. The pedals showed some risk for the lower legs due to their displacement. The 18 month old child dummy received good protection while the 3 year old child passenger showed high readings in chest and head exposure.

David Ward, Global NCAP Secretary General said,

“This is a huge landmark for car safety in India. Congratulations to Tata Motors for achieving India’s first five star rating for adult occupant protection. Congratulations also to Mahindra for their first four star result. The Nexon was engineered in India and this shows the huge capability of the domestic industry to achieve excellence in safety design and performance. With the Nexon, Tata have shown the global car industry that to achieve five stars you can ‘Make in India’. Global NCAP is looking forward to many more Indian five star cars and further improvements in both pedestrian protection and crash avoidance.”
