Renault’s 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, known for its class-leading performance numbers, has become cleaner in the European market. The manufacturer now offers this engine with a 12V mild-hybrid technology. Renault and Nissan models like the Duster and Kicks could be offered with this cleaner version in the country in the near future.

The mild-hybrid tech will make the petrol engine cleaner as the electric motor offers mild torque boost and regenerative braking. It also allows manufacturers to integrate start stop, aiding fuel efficiency in tight bumper-to-bumper traffic. We have already seen the working of mild-hybrid tech in models such as the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross and MG Hector

Currently, the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine is offered in the Renault Duster and Nissan Kicks without the mild-hybrid tech. It develops a class-leading 156PS of power and 252Nm of torque. Both models are offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-step CVT. The 1.3-litre turbo-petrol comes with a claimed efficiency of 16.5kmpl (MT) and 16.42kmpl (CVT). But with the addition of mild-hybrid tech, this engine could become more fuel efficient.

The addition of mild-hybrid tech could also make it the perfect replacement for the now-discontinued 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine. Considering the compact SUV segment is booming in the country, Renault could consider capitalising on this tech before mass market manufacturers like Kia and Hyundai steal the show in the segment. Yes, automatic variants of the S-Cross already offer this technology, but its performance is lacklustre at best.

The first mild hybrid-powered Renault SUV could be the Duster, which is expected to be launched in 2021. It is likely to command a premium over the current model priced from Rs 10.49 lakh to Rs 13.59 lakh for the turbo variants (ex-showroom Delhi).
