Nissan India will be riding in a new product soon in the Indian car market. The new offering in question will be the new Nissan X-Trail and will be the flagship offering from the Japanese carmaker in our market. The Nissan X-Trail was the first product from Nissan for the Indian market and was launched in 2004 but poor sales meant that it was withdrawn last year.
The new Nissan X-Trail SUV heading to our shores will be the current generation model that was launched at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Unlike the brutish and large dimensions of the older SUV the new Nissan X-Trail sports a more chiselled and sleeker design language which can be labelled a bit European. The new Nissan SUV has been based on the CMF platform and instead of an all-out off-roader like its predecessor the new Nissan X-Trail is better suited for conventional on-road performance. Having said that, the SUV will be equipped with an electronic 4-wheel drive system which can be operated on the go for mild off-roading.

Talking about powerplant, expect the Indian-spec Nissan X-Trail to be powered by a 2.0-litre displacement diesel motor with an optional CVT transmission. The interiors of the new Nissan X-Trail will be plusher than the older car and will come loaded with features. The cabin layout is typical to that of modern Nissan offerings and will also get a piano black treatment. It will also be the first occasion that the X-Trail will be offered as 7-seater in India. Nissan has no plans to assemble the new X-Trail in India and it will be brought in via the CBU route given the low volumes. This would result in the new Nissan X-Trail to be priced at a premium over its rivals like the Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Santa Fe owing to the higher import duties. Expected pricing for the Nissan X-Trail in India will be around Rs 32 to 35 lakh (ex-showroom).
