It is likely to be called the Belta, and could arrive by the end of this year

  • The Ciaz-based sedan could get minimal changes like the Baleno-based Glanza.

  • It is likely to utilise the same 1.5-litre petrol engine seen in the Ciaz.

  • Expect it to be priced at a slight premium over the Ciaz, with the entry-level variant based on the Ciaz’s mid-spec variant.

Toyota’s partnership with Maruti Suzuki has resulted in the Baleno-based Glanza hatchback and the Vitara Brezza-based Urban Cruiser sub-4m SUV. The partnership, which formed in 2017, included sharing certain models depending on the market. With the two models mentioned above already on sale, the Ciaz and Ertiga are next. The rebadged version of the Ciaz could arrive by the end of this year.

Unlike the changes seen in the Urban Cruiser, we expect the changes to be minimal, like in the Baleno-based Glanza. The changes will see the Suzuki badge being replaced by Toyota’s at the front and rear, steering wheel, and multi-info display. The sedan will mostly offer the same features as the Ciaz. These include a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, push-button start/stop, cruise control, climate control, and LED headlights.

Under the hood, expect the sedan to utilise the same powertrains as seen in the Ciaz: a 1.5-litre petrol engine. In the Ciaz, it is offered with mild-hybrid technology and belts out 105PS and 138Nm. Transmission options consist of a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed torque converter.

The Ciaz-based sedan is likely to replace the Yaris, which has faced unfortunate sales compared to other popular compact sedans like City, Verna and Ciaz. Toyota has also recently trademarked the name ‘Belta’, which could be used for the upcoming sedan.

Like with the Glanza and Urban Cruiser, expect the Toyota sedan to be priced at a slight premium over the Ciaz, which is priced from Rs 8.52 lakh to Rs 11.50 lakh (ex-showroom). The entry-level variant of the Toyota sedan should be based on the mid-spec variant of the Ciaz. Though it is likely to arrive by the end of 2021, delays could be caused if the ongoing pandemic wreaks more havoc than it already has.
