The all-new Chevrolet Camaro finally took its bow on Monday in a special ceremony in Detroit. The coupe goes on sale in America in the first quarter of next year, but European showrooms will have to wait until 2010 before they get a chance to sell one.

The company says that it's a car that stays true to its heritage, but is a thoroughly modern machine at the same time. So, while the long bonnet and short rear deck give it a classic look that harks back to the 1967 original, inside there are modern LED displays as well as retro-look recessed instrument binnacles.

"The new Camaro is just that - new,' said Ed Wellburn, vice president of GM Global Design. 'We acknowledge the nameplate's strong heritage in the form of the design, but recognise that keeping this modern sports car relevant meant more than simply honouring a classic car. The line forms, stance and overall execution are consistent with other new Chevrolets.'

In America, there will be two petrol engine options, a 3.6-litre V6 and a 6.2-litre V8, developing 300bhp and 420bhp respectively. Both come with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The suspension, meanwhile, is a fully independent system, and stability control will be standard.

Also standard on the car will be ultrasonic park assist, Bluetooth connectivity, a premium audio system, six airbags and - in Europe - 20-inch alloy wheels. However, we'll have to wait until nearer the 2010 on-sale date for further details of European models.
