The roots of the Land Rover Defender can be traced back to 1948 when Land Rover vehicles established themselves as the most capable and rugged off-roaders in the world. The Defender’s customer base includes retail and utility customers to NGOs and armed forces from over 100 nations, all of whom believe that the Defender’s durability, off-roading and towing capability is still above that of the competition. It is crucial that the vehicle retain its key ‘go anywhere’ characteristic to please its loyal customers.

As such Land Rover has been very careful not to mess with the vehicle. The 2012 Defender will get a new Euro 5 compliant 2.2 liter diesel engine. The engine IS AS powerful and economical as the 2.4 liter unit it replaces. The new engine has lower emissions than the old engine courtesy a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Other changes include an acoustic engine cover replacing the previous splash cover which has reduced radiating engine noise and providing a more refined drive. The new engine has pushed up the top speed of the vehicle to 144 km/h from 131 km/h of the outgoing engine. The six-speed gearbox has been retained from the outgoing defender. The gearbox comes with the same high ratio top gear for highway cruising and low ratio first gear for low speed crawl required for towing vehicles both off-road and on-road.
Two new optional packages are going to be on offer for the 2012 Land Rover Defender. The first is called the comfort pack which includes air conditioning, power windows, a stereo and remote central locking
The other optional pack is called the off-road pack. This includes Anti-lock Braking System, heavy duty rims with MTR tyres, tow ball and under-ride protection bar.

The design and body structure of the 2012 Defender will not change which means it will look exactly like a Defender should be. The chassis of the vehicle will be available in three different wheelbases and 14 different body styles from soft-tops to hard-tops and crew cabs to station wagons.
