A New Range Rover Coming Soon, To Be Called Range Rover GT! All-electric Prototype REVEALED

It’s no secret that Range Rover is looking at an electrified future, and one of its upcoming models has been teased through a prototype reveal. Set to be called the Range Rover GT, this nameplate will be the fifth in the Range Rover family and be based on an all-electric architecture. Here are all the details so far, and what the prototype looks like:

Range Rover GT Prototype: Design

Expected to be positioned between the Velar and Sport in the Range Rover lineup, the GT would be the carmaker’s fifth nameplate to wear the prestigious badge. Not many details are known as of now, but the prototype shown reveals unique coupe-SUV styling with sharp design elements that are a departure from the usual boxy silhouettes of its siblings.

Upfront, you can see a curvy profile for the nose with vertical air vents on either side. It also features what appear to be active air vents at the bottom, which could open and close automatically to optimise battery cooling and aerodynamics. However, by far the signature element remains the sleek DRLs, which get a pixelated effect. It also gets a clamshell bonnet, giving it added muscle.

The side profile reveals a silhouette unlike any Range Rover we have seen till now, focusing more on sleekness than ever before. The sharply raked windshield swoops back into a hunchback shape, tapering off sharply into the bootlid. Other notable elements include flush door handles, massive black alloy wheels, a charging flap on the rear fender and a sharkfin antenna. Roof rails have strangely been given a miss.

The rear-end of the SUV is under wraps for now, but we can see outlines of thin LED strips, which could make up the taillamp cluster. Do note that this is a prototype only, and the final production version could see some minor, and maybe even major, changes to the design.

Range Rover GT Prototype: Interior & Features

Inside, the typical Range Rover minimalism has been elevated to the next level. There is a layered dashboard almost hiding the width-spanning AC vents in its folds. Two ‘floating’ screens, for the touchscreen infotainment and digital instrument cluster, are all you have in terms of notable elements.

It gets a two-spoke steering wheel with metallic inserts housing the controls. The gear selector moves to the steering column as well, so the centre console can be neat and equipped with what looks to be dual wireless charging pads. What is interesting is that the Meridian speakers mounted on the doorpads feature a unique ‘waterfall-like’ look that is sure to become a conversation piece.

Even for rear occupants, there is a generous amount of pampering on offer, including a full glass roof, rich materials all around and even a dedicated touchscreen control panel in the middle.

Range Rover GT Prototype: Powertrains

Being a prototype, we do not know about the powertrain specifications of the GT as of now, although the carmaker has announced that it will offer the car initially in the fully-electric guise, with a strong-hybrid version set to join later. 

The GT will be based on the carmaker’s brand-new EMA platform, which will also underpin the Jaguar Type 01 set to break cover sometime next year. At launch, the Range Rover GT will be manufactured exclusively at its facility in Halewood, UK.

Range Rover GT Prototype: India Bound….Or Not?

Right now, it is too early to comment on the GT’s production and launch timelines, and an India launch remains unconfirmed for now. Notably, while a global launch may come about in a year or two, India could remain lower down on the priority list, given that the India-UK FTA does not include EVs, making it quite an expensive option over time, compared to its ICE-powered siblings.

Range Rover is seeing some of its best days ever, and the brand certainly wants to go further. While being quite a radical design, the GT may turn out to be quite the sleek and sporty coupe-SUV with the potential to attract younger audiences, who may not have considered the brand otherwise. However, a lot of details are yet to be revealed, and it is too early to pass judgement on the GT; we wait to see it in the flesh when wraps are finally taken off.
