New Z12E engine gets a three-cylinder layout
Offered with mild-hybrid system
Internationally, this engine will be paired with a CVT gearbox
Maruti Suzuki has taken the wraps off the next-gen Swift concept in Japan. It’s expected to break cover on our shores sometime in 2024. And one of the biggest news for the upcoming hatchback is underneath the hood as it will get a brand new engine, which has been revealed in Japan.

The brand new powertrain in question is the carmaker’s new 1.2-litre Z12E three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that will replace the existing 89PS 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit. We suspect the new naturally aspirated engine is expected to retain the power numbers of the outgoing engine while delivering better fuel economy. It will also get mild-hybrid technology.

In Japan, this engine will be paired with a CVT gearbox. However, for India, you can expect it to come with a manual transmission. It remains to be seen if Maruti equips the new Swift with the CVT or an AMT option.

The Swift Concept, which was showcased at the recently concluded 2023 Japanese Mobility Show, previews the next-gen Swift. In fact, Maruti has started testing the model on our shores with even certain ADAS features. For more details, take a look at our reveal story.

When it comes to India, you can expect it to command a premium over the current model, which is priced from Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). It will lock horns with the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Tata Punch, as well as the Renault Triber.
