Yamaha’s Electric Motocross Bike Gets A Clutch!

Yamaha is taking its electric motocross ambitions from the exhibition floor to the dirt track! The Japanese bike maker has confirmed that its YE-01 Racing Concept will make an exhibition appearance at the 2026 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), scheduled to begin on October 2 in Ernée, France.

First showcased at EICMA 2025, the electric motocross machine has been developed in collaboration with French electric motorcycle specialist Electric Motion SAS (EM). While the YE-01 is currently being evaluated for potential participation in the MXEP electric motocross racing series, Yamaha has not indicated any plans to put it into production.

What Sets It Apart?

Unlike conventional electric motorcycles that rely on instant torque delivery without a traditional clutch, the YE-01 takes a rather interesting approach. It features a hydraulic wet multi-plate clutch, allowing riders to modulate power delivery through the clutch lever, much like they would on a conventional motocross bike. This should make the transition to electric power less alien for experienced dirt riders.

Power comes from a liquid-cooled AC synchronous motor paired with a lithium-ion battery. Yamaha is yet to disclose its crucial figures such as the power output, battery capacity, kerb weight or riding range.

The concept also has an impressive 345 mm of ground clearance. 

Shared Underpinnings

Yamaha has drawn heavily from its motocross racing experience while developing the new electric motocross bike. While the bike features a new frame, it has drawn inspiration from the petrol-powered YZ450F motocross bike.

International Rivals

Internationally, the upcoming electric Yamaha motocross bike will go up against the Stark Varg MX 1.2, an established contender in the electric dirt bike space. 

However, in India, the closest equivalent we could get with time is the Ultraviolette Shockwave, which is set to launch in the first quarter of 2027. While the Shockwave is intended as a production motorcycle rather than a dedicated racing machine, it represents a similar shift towards electric-powered recreational riding.
