Petrol, diesel, EV… and now possibly CNG? What is Tata up to?

Tata Sierra

Tata Motors is exploring additional powertrain options for its new SUVs, but one of the biggest questions currently is whether the new Sierra could be offered in a CNG variant. With the demand for CNG increasing across segments and Tata already seeing strong traction for its factory-fitted CNG models, the possibility is not much far-fetched.

Here is a closer look at what Tata has said publicly and what we know so far about the Sierra's potential engine lineup:

CNG For Larger Tata SUVs Is Under Consideration

Tata already sells CNG variants of the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Nexon. However, all of these are sub-4-metre models. For anything above that size, Tata has thus far avoided offering CNG. That might soon change.

In recent media interactions, Tata confirmed that it is "closely watching" the 4.3-metre segment. If customer demand increases, models larger than the Nexon could get CNG. This places the Curvv and the upcoming Sierra directly in the zone of consideration.

While there is no confirmed launch timeline, Tata's official stance suggests that, for the first time, the door is open for CNG in bigger SUVs.

What CNG Engine Could The Sierra Use?

If Tata goes ahead with a CNG variant for the Sierra, the most likely candidate is the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine already offered in the Tata Nexon iCNG.

Tata is presently the only carmaker in India offering a turbo-petrol + CNG combination, thus giving it a technical lead. Sharing this engine, perhaps in a higher state of tune, with the Curvv and Sierra would allow Tata to share components and keep costs in check.

However, Tata has not confirmed any displacement, tuning, or output figures for a possible CNG Sierra.

Tata Sierra Confirmed Powertrain Options

While we await more details about the CNG variant, the Sierra is likely to get two engine options at launch which include a new 1.5-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel option. Both engines are expected to be offered with a choice of 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission options. Here are the expected specifications of the powertrains:

Why Tata Is Evaluating CNG for Bigger Cars

The surge in CNG demand is hard to ignore. Tata crossed 1.2 lakh CNG car sales in CY24 and expects the figure to rise further. Industry-wide, CNG grew at 35 per cent, outpacing hybrid and electric growth rates.

With the new, stricter emission regulations coming in the late 2020s, including the latest CAFE 3 norms, manufacturers are looking at ways to reduce CO₂ emissions across their portfolio. CNG provides much lower running costs and lower emissions than petrol; hence, it is a practical option for fleet and private buyers alike.

This regulatory and market environment makes a CNG Sierra a realistic possibility.

Moreover, Tata was the first manufacturer to introduce concealed twin-CNG cylinders under the boot, a smart solution that freed up valuable luggage space, which is especially crucial in the sub-4m segment.

ZigSays…

While there is no confirmation of a CNG Sierra from Tata as of this date, based on official comments, market trends, and platform strategy, a CNG option is clearly under active consideration. If Tata sees demand in the 4-metre-plus SUV segment for low-running-cost powertrains, the Curvv and Sierra will be the first in line to receive CNG. While final specs remain unknown, the 1.2-litre turbo-CNG motor is the most probable fit.
