Tata Motors have launched the Altroz Racer, which essentially is the sportier iteration of the Altroz hatchback, at an introductory price tag of Rs 9.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The Altroz Racer with its sportier appeal, directly gives competition to the Hyundai i20 N Line, which has been enjoying its own space since it was launched. Well no more, as we put them head to head on paper and find out which out of the two is the hotter hatch!

According to the price table above, the Tata Altroz Racer comes out as a much affordable option with the entry price point undercutting the i20 N Line by Rs 50,000 and the top-spec trim by a substantial margin of Rs 1.52 lakh. But do note that the i20 N Line gets an optional dual-clutch transmission option, while the Racer is offered just with a stick shifter.

In reality, not much of a difference can be pointed out between the size of them both as they’re hatchbacks belonging to the same segment. However on paper, the i20 N Line is a bit longer with more wheelbase and wider, but the Altroz Racer talls ahead of it and has a larger boot capacity.

Both of these performance oriented hatchbacks are well equipped with safety, comfort and convenience features with a few misses here and there. While the Tata Altroz Racer gets niceties over the i20 N Line like ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and digital driver’s display, it misses out on features such as a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and disk brakes for all four wheels.

Both the hatchbacks get 3-cylinder turbo petrol engines, but the Altroz Racer gets a bigger displacement unit. Even the power figures are identical with the i20 N Line being a tad torquier. A point worth noting is that, for now the Altroz Racer is being offered in just the manual transmission, while the i20 N Line gets a manual and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle-shifters for a much enthusiastic appeal.

Both these hatchback, do bring along a sense of sportiness to their characters with styling cues and feature updates to entice the young audience. They are almost equally fairing on paper in terms of performance figures and both get tech loaded to the brim. With few feature misses here and there, and considering the competitive pricing, the Tata Altroz Racer is a much affordable option.
