Having a stressed week and want to unwind, and go for a long drive which also feels exciting? Well, for that you would need a car that is fun-to-drive, giving you the thrill and adrenaline rush at the press of a pedal! So if you are in the market shopping for a car that will put a smile on your face once you're behind the wheel, then you have come to the right place. We have listed down the top 5 cars under Rs 20 lakh that gifts you with a grin, every time you're in the driver's seat!
The list includes different body styles, car makes, and powertrains. So make sure you read through everything:
Price: Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12.56 lakh
While we do not have hot hatches like the Volkswagen Polo and Abarth Punto currently in the market (yet), the Hyundai i20 N Line is one such hatchback which offers sporty driving, featuring a sporty suspension setup and a capable turbo-petrol engine. Additionally, it also comes with cosmetic enhancements over the regular model and a throaty exhaust system which adds to the drama.
It is powered by a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine, coupled with either a manual transmission or a DCT. It makes 120 PS and 172 Nm, which provides more than enough grunt and punch. We recommend you opt for the manual gearbox for a more engaging drive!
Price: Rs 7.55 lakh to Rs 13.04 Lakh
Maruti cars somehow manage to enter every possible list! Maruti’s stylish Fronx SUV is not just known for its design, but also for its turbo-petrol engine which is capable of putting more expensive cars in the rearview mirror! The Fronx is also available with an NA petrol engine, but that’s not the engine you should be picking if you want to some fun. Instead you should opt for the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine which makes 100 PS and 148 Nm. The figures might not be as impressive as some other cars in this list, but let’s remember that it's a Japanese engine and makes real horsepower!
Fun fact: This turbo-petrol engine first debuted with the Baleno RS, but that car wasn’t as well-received as Maruti would have liked!
Price: Rs 7.89 lakh to Rs 14.40 lakh
The Skoda Kylaq is the European marque’s baby SUV on our shores, manufactured on the larger Kushaq’s MQB AO IN platform. It is arguably the best driving cars in its segment, thanks to the well-curated chassis, agile handling and feedback-rich steering wheel. It is powered by a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine which makes 115 PS and 178 Nm.
The good thing is that the engine is available from the entry-level variant onwards, so whether you pick the base or boss variant won't matter if buying a fun-to-drive car is your priority. We believe that it is the spiritual successor of the Polo, what do you think? Let us know in the comments section.
Price: Rs 11.56 lakh to Rs 19.40 lakh
Sedans are meant to be sporty, and the Volkswagen Virtus just lives up to that tag! It is one of the few cars in our country that still has the soul and personality of a good driving car. Known for its impressive steering feedback, sharp handling and SUV-like ground clearance; the Virtus definitely hits the right notes when it comes to being a sporty sedan.
We recommend you opt for the GT variants which comes with the potent 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine which makes 150 PS and 250 Nm. There are also subtle design tweaks including blacked-out elements and a sporty lip spoiler which adds to the appeal.
The Skoda Slavia which is quintessentially the same car as the Virtus also comes with the same chassis setup and engine. However, it’s not as flashy and out there as the Virtus and its suspension setup is also not as sporty (inclined more towards comfort) as that of the Slavia. That being said, we recommend you test drive both Slavia and Virtus and then pick the one that appeals to you more!
Price: Rs 18.9 lakh to Rs 26.9 lakh (ex-showroom)
Not the most soulful when compared to the petrol engines on the list, but the quickest one! Petrol-heads might be a bit disappointed seeing an EV in the list, but the Mahindra BE 6 is one such EV that can provide you with an experience that cars of double the price offer. For under Rs 20 lakh, you won’t be able to go with the most potent version of the BE 6, but even its entry-level version has plenty on offer. With around 230 PS and 380 Nm on tap, it is the most powerful car on the list. What makes it fun is that it's a rear-wheel drive SUV, capable of drifting and making donuts. Head over to this reel, to get a hint of what the BE 6 is all about!
A RWD, electric micro-car which gets you instantaneous torque from the word GO….
Cars are just toys for some, and more than that for some hardcore car enthusiasts. While features, and design makes a car interesting; some people still really care about how the car drives.
A few carmakers are not just focused on making cars more powerful, but also make an effort to improve the way it handles and rides, among other driving aspects.
The excitement that some of these cars provide makes them more than just vehicles that transport you from point A to point B. Out of the 5 cars, which one would you buy? Let us know in the comments.
