My lungs are choking with dirt but I can’t forget those smells. Ahh, the smell of burning rubber, inhaling petrol and diesel smoke mixed with dirt. If there was ever a festival that could make your heart rev like a high-compression V8, it was Generation Speed.
Held on an open stretch of tarmac, the Aamby Valley Airstrip, this was the kind of event that had everything from sideways Maruti 800 to tractors pulling wheelies while blaring Punjabi beats. Here’s our top 5 moments from the first-ever edition of Generation Speed:
You’d expect a heavily modified JDM monster to steal the show in the drifting department, but no. This is India, and we do things differently. Meet the Maruti 800 from SportTech, reborn in a RWD avatar, wearing the iconic Initial D livery and powered by a 1.1-litre F10D engine with a custom LSD.
This little rocket sent plumes of smoke into the sky as it gracefully slid. If Takumi had been born in India, he would be late for his deliveries because he would be too busy pulling slides at every corner. (Whoop Whoop. That's the sound of the police)
Tractors, massive speakers mounted on them, blasting typical Punjabi music, and then suddenly, BAM! You see them pop a wheelie like a stunt bike.
It was a scene that could only be described as a mechanical mosh pit, with these farm machines defying physics and proving that horsepower and torque aren’t just for sports cars.
Somewhere, an agricultural engineer was either crying or clapping in awe.
Now, PowerDrift isn’t new to us. Our brothers-in-arms, the PowerDrift team, turned dreams into reality with an exhibition run that had everyone drooling all over the tarmac. Their lineup felt like a scene straight out of a petrolhead’s fantasy list.
The lineup? A Mercedes-AMG SL 500, two old-school Fiats, a Nissan GT-R (The Gojira!), a Lamborghini Gallardo (looking straight outta Need for Speed), a Mitsubishi EVO IX, a Ford Mustang Mach 1, a Mahindra BE 6 and not one but two Porsche 911s. A 911 GT3RS and a 911 Turbo S.
And a special appearance was made by the first-ever Mahindra Thar prototype built.
If you weren’t already losing your mind, the countless other exotics in the lineup made sure you did. By the end of it, we gotta chance to hitch a taxi run in the 911 GT3 RS and the EVO IX. It was pure bliss!
Who would’ve thought we’d see the legendary Mercedes G-Class and the tank-like Hummer EV standing side by side in their electric avatars? Both giants, both brimming with history, and both proving that the future of power doesn’t necessarily need fossil fuels.
Some cheered for the Merc’s timeless charm, others swore by the Hummer’s brute presence. But either way, it was a sight to behold
They may have been tiny, but they raised more hell than a stampede of superbikes. The festival ground turned into a dust-pocket as the petrol and electric RC cars went berserk, kicking up dust and putting on a show that was just as intense as the full-size action.
And when you hear that this collection of imported RC cars was worth over a crore, you realize just how serious this hobby really is. Hats-off to these passionate owners and collectors!
You know you’re at a serious automotive event when a trio of Dodge Challengers shows up, straight from Dubai, via the carnet route. These muscle-cars rumbled into the venue like a typical American, flaunting their V8 growls and unapologetic road presence.
They weren’t here to race, instead they were here to flex, and boy, did they succeed. The crowd’s collective testosterone levels shot up instantly as the Habibis made their presence felt.
To sum it up, car culture in India has always existed, but never before has it come together in such a spectacular, all-inclusive way. Generation Speed wasn’t just about fast cars and wild stunts, it was about community.
Whether you were into JDM legends, European exotics, American muscle, vintage beauties, electric beasts, or even RC chaos, there was something here for you. This was the ignition of something bigger, a reminder that speed, power, and passion knows no boundaries.
And with that, as we cough all the dust our of our lungs, we wait for next year, because this madness needs to happen again.
Now, where do we sign up for tractor wheelie lessons? Stay tuned for a full vlog from Generation Speed!
