Mahindra recently launched the 5 door Mahindra Thar Roxx which is available in six different variants to opt from. In this article, we will be guiding you through its one-below-top AX5 L variant which provides a near perfect package for most of the buyers and is a variant to consider if you can’t stretch your budget to get the top-spec variant. Using 20 real-life images, we explain what the AX5L variant packs and how it looks in flesh:
A point to note is that bookings for the Thar Roxx will open from October 3, while deliveries begin from Dussehra, which is on October 12.
The Thar Roxx features a new body coloured 6-slat grille and larger bumpers which are aggressively styled. The bumpers also get silver accents for contrast.
The one-below-top-spec variant comes with new C-shaped LED DRLs, LED projector headlamps, and LED fog lamps. The DRLS and LED headlights are offered as standard across the variant lineup.
From the sides, it misses out on the larger 19-inch alloy wheels, but sports a set of 18-inch alloys which come in a different design.

Similar to the other variants, it gets the Thar Roxx badging on the front fender and Thar logo housed on the ORVMs. A side foot step has been provided for easy ingress and egress into the car.
Coming to the rear, you can spot the C-shaped LED tail lights, a rear wiper and washer, and a bold looking bumper which comes with a rugged silver skid plate, in line with the off-roader’s design attributes.
A miss at the back is that you get a covered 18-inch spare wheel mounted on the tailgate instead of the exposed 19-inch spare wheel available with the top-spec variant, which according to this author, looks better.
Along with being a rugged off-roader, the Thar Roxx is also known for its premium interior. Despite it not being a top-spec variant, the AX5 L variant offers a host of premium features and niceties to satisfy your needs. However, the dash does not come with soft touch materials that are restricted to the top-end variant.
The centre console remains identical to the top-end variant with a floating touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control. Keen eyed viewers will notice more dummy switches in the stack below the climate control knobs as this variant misses out on some features (more on that a bit later).
Take a look at the lower central console, where you can see the gear lever and cubby holes. This image also illustrates the big problem with the white upholstery, where in this display vehicle, has completely been soiled up.
Due to the absence of Harman Kardon speakers on the doors, you get larger front door pockets compared to what you get with the top-spec variant of the off-roader.
The one-below-top Thar Roxx AX5 L doesn’t get a panoramic sunroof, which is limited to the top-end AX7 L variant. However, Mahindra has still provided it with a single-pane sunroof, which gets a thumbs up from us.
Rear-seat occupants get a nice wide bench that can accommodate three occupants. You are further treated with comfort bits such as reclining ability, a centre armrest and rear AC vents.
Other amenities on board include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity for Android Auto and wired Apple CarPlay, connected car tech features, a wireless phone charger, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, cruise control, steering mounted audio controls, automatic climate control, keyless entry, push button start-stop, and electrically adjustable ORVMs.
Its safety kit comprises 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), ISOFIX child seat mounts, front and rear parking sensors, electronic parking brake with auto-hold function, 3-point seat belt for all passengers, hill hold and hill descent control and ADAS features.
It misses out on certain premium features including ventilated front seats, powered driver’s seat, a panoramic sunroof, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a 360-degree camera. Would you be willing to pay extra for these features? Let us know in the comments below.
The Roxx AX5L can be had with a 2.2-litre diesel engine only, and misses out on the 2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The diesel engine is available with both RWD and 4WD options, making 152 PS and 330 Nm with the former and 175 PS and 370 Nm with the latter when paired with the auto ‘box. The diesel engine can be paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission only.
It comes with the CrawlSmart function (Diesel 4WD only) and Intelliturn function (Diesel 4WD only) for greater off-roading prowess.
The Thar Roxx AX5L variant is priced at Rs 18.99 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom), while price for the 4WD variant is yet to be revealed. The Thar Roxx RWD’s range starts from Rs 12.99 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 20.49 lakh. The elongated Thar goes up against the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha 5-door, while also being an off-roader alternative to compact SUVs like the VW Taigun, Honda Elevate, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
