Mahindra recently launched the new 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx, which is the elongated version of the 3-door Thar. The off-roader is offered in six broad variants, and for now Mahindra has only revealed prices for the rear-wheel rrive (RWD) variants which start from Rs 12.99 lakh for the base MX1 variant and go all the way up to Rs 20.49 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom) for the top-spec AX7L variant.
Bookings for the new Thar Roxx will open from October 3, while deliveries will commence from Dussehra. In this article, we will be taking you through the second from top, AX5L variant of the lifestyle offroader:
The Thar Roxx gets a new 6-slat grille along with updated bumpers that are larger now. Being just one place away from the top-spec variant, the AX5L’s fascia gets all the design elements including, C-shaped LED DRLs, LED projector headlamps, as well as LED fog lamps. It gets a dual-tone bumper with silver inserts to complete the front look.
In profile, The SUV sits on 18-inch alloy wheels and misses out on larger 19-inch ones which the top-spec variant gets. It gets a Thar Roxx badging on the front fender and Thar branding housed on the ORVMs. The handles for the rear door are seamlessly mounted vertically on the C-pillar instead of the conventional style and position of the door handles. You also get a side foot step for easier ingress and egress.
The rear sports C-shaped LED tail lamps, a covered 18-inch spare wheel mounted on the tailgate and a rear wiper with washer. To add a bit of chunk to the rear, it gets a silver skid plate in the lower section of the bumper.
Step inside and you will notice that the cabin looks quite premium and gets plenty of equipment barring some niceties that are restricted to the top-spec variants. The first thing you notice is the white upholstery which adds to the premiumness and makes the cabin look airy, but will also need better care and maintenance.
The dual-tone dashboard misses out on soft touch materials that are available with the top-spec variant only. The 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system occupies the centre space and is positioned above the round AC vents and the automatic climate control panel. The head unit displays off-road stats as well as offers wireless connectivity for Android Auto and wired Apple CarPlay. You also get a suite of connected car tech features for added convenience.
The AX5L variant comes with a single-pane sunroof, and if you want the fan favorite panoramic sunroof, you will have to opt for the AX7L variant. The Harman Kardon audio system is also available with the top-spec variant only and the AX5L variant gets a 6 speaker sound system including two tweeters.
Other creature comforts include wireless phone charging, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, keyless entry, push button start-stop, cruise control, steering mounted audio controls and electrically adjustable ORVMs. It misses out on ventilated front seats, powered driver seats, and a cooled glovebox apart from the aforementioned omissions.
Safety features include 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), electronic parking brake with auto-hold function, 3-point seat belt for all passengers, ISOFIX child seat mounts, front and rear parking sensors, hill hold and hill descent control. It gets a host of ADAS features but misses out on a 360-degree camera which is restricted to the top-spec variant.
The Thar Roxx AX5L variant is available with a single diesel engine option and that too can be had with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission only. However, it is available with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) options. The diesel engine on offer is a 2.2-litre unit which produces 152 PS and 330 Nm with the RWD variants and 175 PS and 370 Nm with the 4WD ones.
Moreover, the AX5L valiant also introduces the CrawlSmart function (Diesel 4WD only) and Intelliturn function (Diesel 4WD only) for better off-roading capabilities.
The RWD Mahindra Thar Roxx AX5L is priced at Rs 18.99 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom) and The price of the 4WD variant is yet to be announced. The 5-door Thar rivals the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha 5-door, while also being an off-roader alternative to compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
