The Government of India has announced cuts on import duties
Now CBU, CKD and SKD units will be cheaper to import
This means big bikes will become more affordable than before
The Government of India has announced cuts on import duties on completely built up bike units, completely knocked down and semi-knock down units. This means that big bikes that come to India through any of the three routes mentioned above, such as Harley-Davidson bikes, Triumph and Indian Motorcycles, will be slightly cheaper. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the cuts:
Starting off with bikes that displace more than 1600cc:
Import Route |
CBU |
CKD |
SKD |
Pre-2025 import duties |
50 percent |
15 percent |
25 percent |
Post-2025 Budget import duties |
30 percent |
10 percent |
20 percent |
The reduction in import duties on bikes which displace more than 1600cc help in reducing prices of bikes from brands like Harley-Davidson, Indian Motorcycles and Triumph. In Triumph’s case, the Triumph Rocket 3 will benefit from this reduction in price.
When looking at bikes that come under the 1600cc segment, the reduction in imports is not that massive but surely welcomed. Here’s a detailed breakdown:
Import Route |
CBU |
CKD |
SKD |
Pre-2025 import duties |
50 percent |
15 percent |
25 percent |
Post-2025 Budget import duties |
40 percent |
10 percent |
20 percent |
The reduction in import duties is likely done with the goal of increasing consumption overall. It is also in line with the tax cuts that were announced. The biggest recipient of this cut in import duties will be Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles.
India does have a massive market for cruisers as evident by the popularity of models like the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650. That said, the cut in import duties alone won’t help in improving sales of Harley-Davidson bikes. The brand struggles with servicing and availability of spare parts which is a big let down for most customers. The issue with Indian Motorcycles on the other hand is the lack of brand recognition among riders in India.
Overall, we are quite glad the government has decided to cut the import duties on big bikes, and this will help in making certain bikes a lot more affordable. Something many americophiles who are really into the big cruiser and bagger scene will really appreciate.
