The new SmartEco riding mode will help customers extract the e-scooter’s claimed real world range without severely impacting the performance

Ather Energy has updated the Ather 450X and the Ather 450 Plus with a new riding mode: SmartEco. It is designed to strike a good balance between range and performance.

How to update it?

In order to avail the SmartEco ride mode, the Ather 450X and 450 Plus users should have the Ather Connect Pro subscription plan, and the latest version of Atherstack software will have to be installed.

The Ather Connect Lite and Service Lite are priced at Rs 400 and Rs 800 respectively (every quarter), while the more premium Ather Connect Pro and Service Pro will cost you Rs 700 and Rs 1,100 respectively (every quarter).

Once users activate the Ather Labs option in the Ather App, they will be able to install the update.

You can head here to know more about how OTA updates work. That said, the pre-existing ride modes: Ride, Sport and Warp remain unchanged.

What’s new?

The new SmartEco riding mode aims to strike a balance between performance and range. The earlier Eco mode aimed at maximizing range at the cost of performance. But the new SmartEco mode, as the name suggests, is a lot smarter, as its algorithm senses various factors including road condition, riding style, load, and dynamically adjusts acceleration. Ather Energy says the probability of achieving TrueRange (claimed real-world range) is highest when a single passenger is riding, the entire ride is in SmartEco and the ride is at least 10km long. To make things simpler, through this mode the scooter gets a power bar on its display. A blue power bar means that there is sufficient power on tap for the rider to extract. Whereas a red power bar means that there is less power available and the rider should minimise acceleration.

The new ride mode hence enhances the usability of the Ather electric scooters. In a related development, Yamaha plans to enter the Indian EV market. Check out our exclusive story here. The Ather 450X goes up against the likes of the Ola S1 Pro, Simple One and Bajaj Chetak.
