With the launch of the 5-door Thar Roxx, Mahindra expanded its Thar range with not only a larger product but also one designed to offer a more premium experience. Apart from facing competition from other off-road-capable SUVs, its pricing puts it in a similar ballpark as another fellow Mahindra SUV, the XUV700. While both SUVs have their own unique appeal, which one should you consider? Let’s find out in this report.

While the XUV700 is the larger of the two, it is only 20 mm wider than the 5-door Thar Roxx. Additionally, the Thar Roxx is 168 mm taller and has a 100 mm longer wheelbase than the XUV700. These numbers contribute to the Thar Roxx's better road presence, but despite having a long wheelbase, it is available only as a 5-seater. The XUV700, on the other hand, can be had either as a 5-, 6- or a 7-seater.

Coming on to their features, there isn’t much to distinguish between the XUV700 and the 5-door Thar Roxx. In fact, both are equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, along with similar convenience and safety features.

The XUV700 has an advantage with a more well-equipped Sony sound system, dual-zone climate control and an extra airbag.

In the powertrain department, both SUVs are offered with a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine, but with different power outputs. And while you won’t find both SUVs lacking for power, the XUV7 clearly has the bragging rights here with its more powerful engines. Both models include similar transmission choices: a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Additionally, the Thar Roxx is offered with both rear-wheel and four-wheel drivetrain options, while the XUV700 features standard front-wheel drive and an all-wheel-drive option, which lacks the same off-road capability as the Thar Roxx. The Thar Roxx also stands out with its four-wheel-drive capabilities, offering 4x4 drive modes along with a low-range transfer case, and locking differentials, features not available on the XUV700.
Prices for the 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx range between Rs 12.99 lakh and Rs 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom), with prices for four-wheel drive variants yet to be announced. On the other hand, the XUV700 is priced from Rs 13.98 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 26.04 lakh (ex-showroom).

Despite offering similar features, it boils down to your usage when it comes to picking the right car. If you will be spending more time on tarmac, the XUV700 with its monocoque build is the one to pick. However, if you like to be a bit adventurous and venture off the broken path frequently, the Thar Roxx is the one you need to consider.
