First introduced in the early 1990s, the Tata Sierra is all set to make its comeback. The original Sierra was known for its tough stance, unique three-door layout, and signature curved rear glass. Fast-forward to 2025, and Tata has given the SUV a modern interpretation, blending familiar proportions with contemporary styling and an EV powertrain.

In contrast, the 2025 Sierra is all about modern sophistication. It gets a closed-off gloss-black panel in place of a traditional grille, and sleek LED DRLs that run across the body width. The bold front bumper integrates vertical air vents and a thick skid plate, adding to its SUV stance. Despite the modern execution, the upright bonnet and flat fascia in the 2025 Sierra subtly pay tribute to the original.

The side profile is where the Sierra’s legacy stood out. The original model’s three-door layout and curved rear glass made it instantly recognisable on Indian roads. Its short overhangs, pronounced wheel arches, and high ground clearance underlined its purpose-built, rugged character.

The 2025 Sierra takes a more practical approach with a five-door design but retains the familiar proportions. The wraparound rear glass has been reinterpreted to suit the new body style, while elements like squared arches, broader cladding, and flush door handles bring it in line with Tata’s modern design direction.

At the back, the 1991 Sierra kept things simple. A flat tailgate, small rectangular taillamps, and a basic bumper reflected the design sensibilities of its time. It focused on function over form, staying true to its rugged and practical nature rather than chasing visual flair.

The 2025 Sierra, on the other hand, adopts a connected LED taillight bar that stretches across the rear. The tailgate glass now wraps around the sides, a modern reinterpretation of the old model’s signature window line. The sculpted bumper, chunky skid plate, and sleek badging give the new SUV a clean yet robust look.

Inside, the original Sierra was as basic as they come. Hard plastics, simple dials, and a bare dashboard reflected the priorities of the time. Comfort features were limited, but it delivered a commanding view and a sense of toughness.

The 2025 Sierra’s interior takes a completely new direction. It features a wide layered dashboard, twin-screen setup for infotainment and driver display, and soft-touch materials for a more premium feel. Ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, and EV-specific touches make it a far cry from the utilitarian original. Yet, the tall seating position and commanding visibility keep that SUV essence intact.

 From the rugged 1991 Sierra to the latest version, the SUV’s design has evolved significantly. The 2025 version keeps key elements of the original while updating proportions and details for a contemporary look.
