The hatchback segment in India has picked up pace with the 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift re-entering the market in its fourth-gen avatar. With competitive pricing at par with the segment above, it receives competition from sub-4 metre SUVs like the Nissan Magnite. Before we do a ‘proper’ road-test comparison to bring out the prominent differences, let's first examine how these two cars stack up against each other on paper.

It is pretty evident and obvious from the table above that the new-gen Swift is smaller in overall dimensions when compared to the Nissan Magnite. The Magnite also has a longer wheelbase and a better ground clearance than the Swift, considering it is an SUV.

Both the Swift and Magnite are generously packed with tech and safety equipment. Both of them get niceties such as cruise control, automatic climate control, LED headlights, and 16-inch alloy wheels. In comparison, the Magnite gets few additional things over the Swift like a central armrest for front as well as rear seat passengers, a premium JBL speaker system, air purifier, and puddle lamps.

Safety features in the Swift encompass six airbags while the Magnite gets only 2 as standard. Other features like ESP, hill-hold assist, and ISOFIX child seat mounts are standard across both of them. It is worth pointing out that the Magnite offers three driving modes: Eco, Normal and Sport for its turbo-petrol CVT variants, which the Swift doesn’t get.

The new-gen Swift gets a single Z12E series 3-cylinder 1.2-litre NA petrol engine, which can either be opted with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. On the other hand, Nissan offers the Magnite in two different engine options: a naturally aspirated 1-litre unit producing 72 PS and 90 Nm and a 1-litre turbocharged unit producing 100 PS and 160 Nm. The naturally aspirated engine can be opted with a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT while the turbo-petrol can be had with a 5-speed manual transmission and a CVT transmission.

It is worth noticing that despite the Magnite being a car from a segment above, it still starts at Rs 50,000 lower than the starting price of the Swift. With the Magnite being offered in more variants and powertrain options, its variants list is more extensive than that of the Swift. Hence, it tops out at Rs 11.27 lakh which is Rs 1.63 lakh more than the top-spec Swift, especially considering that the Nissan gets a turbo-petrol engine option.

It must also be noted that the Magnite facelift is in the works, expected to be launched later this year. Both these cars rival hatchbacks like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and other micro-SUVs like the Tata Punch, Renault Kiger, and Hyundai Exter.
